STOCK PRICES TONE HIGHER IN MfIRTDEALS Few Speculative Issues in Good Demand; Trading Remains Quiet.
Average Stock Prices
Average of twenty Industrials Tuesday was 306.14. up .35. Average of twenty rails was 153.46, off .39. Average of forty bonds was 94.71, off .24. BY ELMER C. WALZER United Press Financial Editjr NE TT T/YORK, March 13.—Further irregular price movements characterized early stock market trading ' today and the list continued to fluctuate in a narrow trading range. Nevertheless, strong buying went ahead in several recent speculative issues. Coppers responded to the posting of the 20 Vi cent export price, with Anaconda 1 % points higher at 155% and Kennecott up 1% to 88%. Atlantic Refining was another feature of outstanding strength, rising fractionally to 6014, anew high on the movement. Trading remained quiet with tickers easily keeping abreast of the market. Traders were marking time, pending outcome of the federal reserve bank meeting here Thursday. It was felt the ease of money just now was artificial, due to inflow of funds here for income tax payments on the 15th and, as the rate was expected to go higher after that, buying was cautious. Nevertheless, the list developed a better tone as the session wore on, and many issues made advances of a point or more. American Smelting was bid up a point to 114%, American Can 1% to 117%, Nash, 74 to 107, Westiflghouse Electric 1% to 152% and United States Steel 1% to 182%. Radio new stock was bid up a point. Montgomery Ward lost a point, while Sears-Roebuck gained fractionally. Oils generally were higher, helped by the belief that President Hoover would carry to completion his plans to conserve oil resources. Sinclair, Texas Corporatin and Standard of New York followed Atlantic Refining into higher ground.

In the Stock Market
(By Thomson & McKinnon) NEW YORK, March 13.—Tuesday’s easing of the call money rate was undoubtedly due to the fact th; i funds accumulated in anticipation of income tax payments are temporarily available. Its market effect was therefore largely nullified. If we could disregard credit conditions we could very logically take a much more enthusiastic view of the general business outlook, in which railroad and copper company earnings, carloadings, steel prod '’tion, to say nothing of the latest move on the part of the new administration to overcome .overproduction in the oil industry, are outstanding* features. For the present however, the credit situation will rule and we look for a nervous market, at least until the pending reserve bank meetings are out of the way.

BEARS DRIVE WHEAT PRICES • HIGHER^ IN PIT Corn Lower, Oats Follow in Sympathy; Liverpool Fails to Advance. Bji United Press CHICAGO, March 13. Wheat futures showed suprising strength here today, being unevenly higher in spite of bearish foreign markets and improved weather over winter crop belt. Corn was lower in sympathy with cash markets. Oats inclined to follow corn. At opening wheat was 7c lower to 74c higher, com was off Vs to %c and oats were Vs to 74 c lower. Provisions were slightly lower. The rapid advance made in wheat Tuesday has left some traders skeptical of its being maintained. Buying was inspired entirely by reports of damage from southwestern points and operators hold that it is too early to tell conditions of winter crop. Weather in southwest was very favorable today, but northwest was having rain, sleet and snow. Liverpool failed to respond to the advance here. Light receipts of corn are being offset by willingness of other terminal markets to send grain to Chicago and cash market is rather weak. Futures trading is confined largely to pit operators. Oats have had periods of strength with other grains because of exceptionally small receipts, but trading is very dull and fundamental factors unchanged. Chicago Grain Table —March 13— WHEAT— Prev. FOCH GROWS WEAK Condition of Marshal Is Reported Unsatisfactory. By United Press PARIS, March 13.—The condition of Marshal Ferdinand Foch, wartime leader of the allied armies, was reported as unsatisfactory today and his physicians feared another heart attack. Doctors insisted there was no ground for optimism because of the fact that Foch has been allowed to sit in a chair for half an hour daily, which, they explained, was necessary for a person his age. They said he was too weak to move and that his legs have shrunk to the size of normal arms. One of the patient's attendants said the marshal weighed only ninety-two pounds. Death Notices FARMER.
