MONEY OUTLOOK TURNS STOCK TO LOWER TONE Anaconda Copper Center Attraction of Issues; Buying Strong.
Average Stock Prices
Average of twenty Industrials Tuesday was 310.20, off 3.66. Average of twenty rails was 157.03, off ,17. Average of forty bonds was 95.25. off .03. BY ELMER C. WALZER United Press Financial Editor NEW YORK, March 6.—Money outlook continued the principal topic in Wall Street today and stock prices generally reflected great uncertainties on that score. Tuesday’s huge withdrawals from the demand loan market caused considerable apprehension in speculative quarters. Further withdrawals today indicated that further stringency would be witnessed before the March 15 treasury and tax payments were out of the way. Asa result, stocks were generally irregular, despite further broad buying activities in special groups like the coppers and rails. Anaconda again was the centeewnf attraction in the former classification, following action of its directors after the close of the market last night in offering present shareholders the right to subscribe to additional stock at $55 a share in the ratio of two new shares for every five shares held. Anaconda opened Vz point lower at 158 on a sale of 10,000 shares, reflecting profit-taking on the good news. But strong buying set in after the opening and issue was whirled to a further record high above the 162 level. Other representative shares like Steel, General Motors and Chrysler developed a better tone under the leadership of Anaconda and a moderate rally was staged shortly after the opening. Kennecott and Andes were buoyant. But advances were stubbornly resisted by the bear crowd and gains were checked by appearance of heavy profit-taking. The renewal rate of call money at 8 per cent compared with an over-night charge of 10 per cent was looked upon as constructive in many quarters, but speculators were keeping close to

Aside from activity and strength in the coppers, rails furnished the principal feature. Tuesday’s late reaction caused sharp recessions „from their hghs in principal carrier issues, but these were quickly made up in today’s trading. Baltimore & Ohio sold at a further record'high and buoyancy was exhibited by Missouri, Kansas & Texas, Erie and other representative shares. Special issues like A. M. Byers, St. Joseph Lead, Wright Aero, Tobacco Products and Johns-Manville were sharply higher on limited trading while Chrysler continued to feature the automobile group on further active short covering. Buying of Anaconda was impressive and spread to many of the other large producers. Kennecott was taken in huge blocks at its highest levels for the present capitalization while Nevada, Greene Cananea and Granby were in large demand. Demand for Anaconda was stimulated by the attractive rights created by the capitalization plan. At present prices they will be worth more than S3O each. Steels also met with considerable favor. United States Steel rose more than a point and heavy buying activities were resumed 'n the independents. Otis Steel rose more than a point and Bethlehem was taken in large blocks around jts highest levels of the movement. Radio and other spectacular performers were quiet and littlte changed.

(Bv Thomson & McKinnon) NEW YORK, March 6.—The wholly unexpected tightening in money rates just when an easing was anticipated, has led to various theories to account for the scarcity of funds. The most popular explanation is that the federal reserve board’s injunction to member banks is beginning to bring results. The fact that out of town banks were the principal institutions to withdraw funds lends color to this idea. Credit conditions have thus again been brought into the foreground, eliminating for the time being all favorable elements. The technical position of the market is such that a rate of above 10 per cent, which is not at all an improbability, might be ifery hard to withstand.
