By \ NLW \ OitK, Feb. 15,—Wholesale .gelling of log : by local and out of town banks today cent call money from (i'j to 10 per cent in the afternoon and brought down prices throughout the entire Stock Exchange list. Trading was active and gathered momentum as the selling became persistent. Nevertheless, there was an absence cl panicky iiquiuat ion. Aggravating the decline was the information that bo: kens’ acceptances here, in Chicago and Boston had been advanced % per cent. This took all the glamour from the decision of New York federal reserve directors to retain flic 5 per cent rediscount rate, for it was the forerunner of a rise in the rate. Brokers sre loans declined $101,000,OCO last week, the federal reserve reported Thu; d.,y n'-\ht. The pivicus week they gained $110,000,G00, hence the latest figure did not impress the street as being in anywhere near the condition expected by reserve authorities. Today’s calling of some $60,000,000 In loans was partly for mid-month settlements. It was, however, far more than the usual amount of loan calling and may have been the result of a jogging up of member reserve banks by the reserve board to reduce the amount of funds on call in line with the board's edict of a week ago. Out of town banks were estimated to have withdrawn $40,000,000. At the outset prices were whirled up of the good news of retention of the bank rate. Selling soon followed, however. Copper shares and | utilities offered stubborn, but futile j resistance to the drives made! against them and late in the day j gave ground.

(Bv Thomson & McKinnon) NEW YORK. Feb. IS.—Although the market expressed at the opening a reasonable amount -of satisfaction over the loan decrease and the maintenance of the rediscount rate, there was lacking to a marked degree that air' of buoyancy to which we har e become accustomed to In sessions following similar announcements. The refusal of the market to respond more forcibly acted as a disturbing feature and resulted in a liberal amount of profit taking. This selling continued in increasing volume after the announcement bv the federal reserve board of a raise in the bill rate to a level above the rediscount rate, an action without a precedent and looked upon as a further move in their effort to control speculative funds, end lt developed into rather extensive liquidation upon the heavy calling of loans bv bhnks and the resultant increase in money costs. That the atmosphere is charged with uncertainty there can be no question and that the effort of the reserve board to maintain its facilities primarily for the benefits of business is a determined one and will eventually meet with success there can be little doubt. We see nothing to be gained bv Ignoring the situation with which we are confronted. On the contrary, we feel that compliance with the oft-repeated suggestions to reduce commitments will pro'c of vast benefit not onlv to the market position as a Whole, but to the individual as well.

CHICAGO, Feb. 15.—Profit-taking on the recent advance caused wheat f:;t ui't% to close weak here today. Corn lest early gains of over 1 cent and closed unevenly steady. A dull cash market weakened oats. - At the close wheat was % cent to 1 cent lower, corn was Vi cent lower to y% cent higher, and oats were off Vi cent to 1 cent. Provisions were unevenly lower. Wheat was very active during the morning, quick. price* fluctuations being the feature of trading. There wps considerable realizing, but buying by Winnipeg and foreigners was sufficient. to absorb offering and kc-’p prices steady most of the day. foreign ’buying was inspired by Ri%:i in government report telling of damage to winter crop in Volga and central regions. C; Tp , advanced sharply due to strong tone in wheat, and fears of a thaw which would present country movement, of the grain. There is said to be a large short ipterest in coin. The market showed independent strength after mid-session and was stronger than wheat throughout most of later trading." Gats were strong with other grains most-of the day, but the price range Trading was quiet. Cos i markets were: Wheat, unchanged to V cent higher; corn, unchanged to VS cent higher and cats, unchanged. Receipts were: Wheat, 35 cars;.corn, 268, and oats, 62.
