FOOD AND FUEL LOW IN RECORD EUROPE FREEZE Big Cities of Continent Face Intense Suffering in Cold. Bu Unite 4 Perm LONDON, Feb 15.—Shortage of food, fuel and drinking water in big European cities grew more acute today under the continued pressure of the most intense cold in many years, and at some points, in centuries. Berlin, Vienna. Belgrade and London suffered principally, the latter from a water shortage which was growing intense. Snowbound freight trains were unable to take food and fuel into Berlin and Vienna, where coal tonnages above normal were needed to combat the below zero temperatures. The Belgrade water supply was almost frozen and homes there were suffering for want of coal. The Thames, Seine and Rhine were frozen in places for the first time in years and 100 vessels were icebound in the Baltic sea today. Shipping was hindered seriously, many vessels running aground before driving snow-storms along the English coast. Rail Service Disrupted Railway service through the con--1 inent and in England was disrupted completely or badly impaired. Trains betv.-een Vienna and Budapest w-ere . uspended temporarily because of a snow blockade. Wolves and wild boars abandoned their forest lairs and encroached on the edges of civilization. Morp than a score of persons have been killed this week by wolves. Hunting parties were formed in towns- and villages along the French Riviera to drive off the boars. Gypsies especially were affected by the cold wave, condemned by their homeless wandering and reputation they have among continental peasants. At least thirty-three were dead in various places. The canals of Venice were filled with blocks of ice as the city shivered from the worst weather since 1788, the last time the canals were frozen. Ancient palaces along the grand canal were festooned with icicles. Economic Loss Is Heavy Professor W. Gotham brought a laugh from shivering German people by reminding them that the “last ice age” continued about a million years. Temperatures in Germany range around the zero mark. Economic results of the hard winter in Germany doubtless will cost the country a sum equaling a large part, of a Dawes plan annuity. Business, normally most, active in February, is almost at a standstill. At least 250.000 persons are unemployed. In Paris the temperature was 10 above zero. The Seine was frozen from bank to bank at Montbleau and was filled with ice floes at Paris. W. C. T. U. Leader to Speak S" Times spicial SWEETSER. Ind.. ACCUSED MAN MISSING Alexandria Optometrist Charged With Trying to Cheat Woman. ALEXANDRIA. Ind., f eb. 15. Accused of attempting to dupe Miss Malinda Tyner, an aged woman. Dr. C. I. Daniels, optometrist, is missing. She has made her home with Dr. Tyner for ten years. Ah affidavit has been filed by Otto Good, a nephew of Miss Tyner, charging Dr. Daniels forged her name to an SBO note. Recently Dr. Daniels failed in an effort to have Miss Tyner declared insane.
