GASOLINE TAX BILL SURVIVES FIRST BATTLE House Votes 56 to 40 Against Minority Report to Kill Measure. The proposed 1-cenL increase in the gasolinr tax survived first fire of opponents in the Indiana house of representatives today when the house voted 36 to 40 against a minority report of the roads committee which would have meant the bill's death. That, the state highway department has used road allocations as a club to drive house members into line for the bill which would boost high .ay building revenues approximately $4,000,000 annually, was the charge hurled on the floor. Held in Committee Representative Oscar A. Anlgren of Whiting openly made the charge which has been whispered about statehou.se corridors for the two weeks the gas tax bill has been held in committee. Following defenders of the measure who insisted Indiana lags in highway building. Ahlgren shouted: “Friends of this bill will tell you to send it on to second reading, so that it can be printed and laid on our desks. “You can’t salve me that way! The state highway commission has been bearing on you, and you're weakening! Gwin Speaks for Bill ' You came down here opposed to a gasoline tax increase. There will be another 200 miles of road paved this year. It probably will be built where bargains are made to pass this bill!” Representative Truman G. Murdm, champion of the bill and who his dominated road committee sessions, jumped to his feet. “I resent that because I have not been promised any road.” he asserted. “It's the people in the rural districts who now want a fair share of the road building. The opponents- of this bill already have had their share!” Representative Fabius Gwin of Shoals, a Democrat, spoke for the bill, reminding the house it bore the approval of Ed Jackson, former Governor, and Governor Harry G. Leslie. GRIFFIS CHOSEN TRUSTE Ga mew ell Superintendent Made Director in Firemen Fund. William B. TEST SANITY OF BABY KILLERS Question Women to Find More Victims. Bp r'nitrd Prrg* ST. JOSEPH. Mich.. Feb. 14 —Two demented mothers who murdered their five children were questioned further today as authorities sought to learn if even more babies had died at their hands. A confession signed by Mrs. Okel Gorham, 25, said the babies were poisoned or strangled to death by herself and her mother, Mrs. Ethel Lewis, 57. The women will be subjected to sanity tests today or Friday. Officers, meantime, will seek to learn if they disposed of children bom to unmarried women, in addition to murdering their own. The sheriff’s office announced that Mrs. Gorham had signed a confession which related how she and her mother killed four children. Murder charges have been withdrawn until the sanity tests arc completed. Mrs. Gorham, in one confession, said seven babies had been killed but later changed her story, saying only five were murdered. Three of these were her own and the other two her mother’s, she said. Mrs. Gorham declared her mother placed poison in milk given to the babies and some were killed in this manner. Others were strangled, she said. LESLIE TAX BOARD BILL KILLED IN HOUSE Minority Report on Measure Is Adopted. An out-and-out administration measure was booted to oblivion by the Indiana house of representatives today. It was the Adams-Byers tax measure, broadening state tax board powers of review, as recommended by Governor Harry G. Leslie in his message to the legislature. A divided report from the house Judiciary B committee signalized the “kick-off.” Seven committeemen favored passage; six were for indefinite postponement. After verbal scrimmage in which Representative J. Glen Harris of Gary, led the bi-partisan onslaught, a standing vote showed fifty-two house members favoring substitution of the death-dealing minority report for the favorable report.
