U. S. PROBES GIRL’S DEATH IN WELFARE HOME Checks Up on Charge That Drugs Are Used to Control Inmates. By United Press ALBUQUERQUE, N. M., Jan. 18. —lnmates of the girls’ welfare home were questioned today by narcottic agents and a state legislative committee investigating charges that drugs were administered by home officials to quiet rebellious inmates. Both investigations were based on the verdict of a coroner’s jury that Helen Haskew, 18, died from injections of “twilight sleep,” allegedly administered by the welfare home physician as punishment for the girl’s attempt to escape the institution. The federal narcotic probe by Agent J. C. Piper was approved by the legislative committee appointed by Governor Dillon. A jury sitting at the inquest into Miss Haskew's death found that she had succumbed to “twilight sleep” injections administered by Miss Bertha Lips, superintendent,

and Dr. Evelyn. Frisbie, home physician. Inmates of the home who testified at the inquest were questioned by the committee of four state senators and four representatives. Members said testimony disclosed that "twilight sleep” frequently had been administered to inmates who had rebelled against bread and water diets imposed for infraction of minor institution rules. Eugene Lujan, district attorney announced he would file manslaughter charges against Miss Lips and Dr. Frisbie within a few days. Lujan was believed withholding them pending developments in the governor’s investigation.

DOCTORS’ HOPES FOR SAVING LIFE OF FOMKROW Clemenceau Nearly Well After Grip Attack, Physician Says. Bu United Press PARIS, Jan. 18.—Marshal Ferdinand Foch rested well Thursday night, sleeping five hours without a suffocating crisis, his physicians announced today. The six doctors attending the

former allied army commander expected to be able to tell by tonight the direction the uremia condition will take. The heart action still will continue a source of worry, however, they said. For the second successive time no physician sat by the marshal’s bedside Thursday nteht. Only the regular night nurse was present, and Foch’s friends, who continued to come in crowds to inquire after his welfare, were encouraged by the news. Georges Clemenceau, wartime premier, practically had recovered from an attack of grip today. Clemenceau probably will be allowed to take a short walk the first clear day.
