BUSY MOVIES DELAY TRIAL OF ALMA RUBENS Actress Smiles, Judge Scowls at Second Continuance. Bu United Pret LOS ANGELES, Cal., Jan. 13. Busy Hollywood is making it difficult to bring Alma Rubens to trial lor disturbing the peace with allegedly wild and boisterous parties at her home in the screen colony. Two weeks ago, when Miss Rubens’ trial by a Jury first was scheduled to get underway, the pretty actress arrived in court forty-five minutes late. She found the trial had been postponed and was forced to put up SSOO bond for her appearance. Defense Delays Case Thursday Miss Rubens was in advance of the hour set for her case. The courtroom and corridors were packed. The judge was on time. So was the jury. But when Judg; Northrup called the case he learned that Rita Carewe, her husband; Leroy Mason, and Mr. and Mrs. Finis Fox, members of the screen colony, who are listed as prosecution witnesses, had not put in appearance. It was said they were unable to leave their work. Judge Northrup visibly was provoked. Miss Rubens smiled her lovliest, for this time it was the prosecution and not the defendant who was delaying the trial. Finally, Judge Northrup ordered the case reset for trial Feb. 5. Denies all Charges Charges were brought against Miss Rubens by Mrs. M. Uhl, owner of the bungalow court in which Miss Rubens resides. Mrs. Uhl said the actress used profane language, prowled about the yard with a flashlight, peering into windows and that on one occasion Miss Rubens threatened to beat her. The defendant has denied all charges, explaining that her flashlight expedition was in search of a gadget which dropped off the gadiator and fell out the window. FLOOD CONTROL SOUGHT Lowland Fanners Near Petersburg Seek Legislature Relief. Bu United Preen PETERSBURG, Ind., Jan. 18.—A petition to the general assembly that legislation be enacted to protect lowland farmers against flood waters is being prepared by residents of the White river bottoms west of here. The farmers explain that as more timber is cut off each year floods make “bottom farming” more hazardous- and less profitable and point out that seven suits have been filed in Pike circuit court asking foreclosure on Patoka river bottoms, because landowners have refused to pay bonds assessed against them for dredging purposes. READ ACTS IN SPANISH Efforts to Block Translation of Legislative Journal Is Success. By l nited Ptess SANTA FE, N. M., Jan. 18.—The presence of two members who do not speak English has prevented the lower house of the legislature from dispensing with the reading of the journal in Spanish. When a motion to dispense with the Spanish reading was introduced today, the two Spanish speaking members blocked its adoption with eloquent objections.
