POWER TRUST PROPAGANDA IN ALABAMA AIRED $46,000 Spent in Four; Years for Publicity, U. S. j Probers Told. WASHINGTON, Jan. 10.—Activ- | Ities of the Alabama Utilities Information Bureau which spent. $46,390.37 on power industry propauana efforts between 1922 and 1926 were disclosed today in testimony before the federal trade commission as it resumed open hearings in its utility investigation. Contributions to the bureau which spent an average of about SII,OOO annually came from power corporations led by the Birmingham Electric and Alabama Power companies, financial records introduced revealed. The Birmingham Electric gave $20,304 and the Alabama Power $19,249 in the four-ye ir period. Published Bulletin Examination of Leoi C. Bradley, former director of the now defunct publicity bureau, devt'oped his propaganda efforts extended to newspapers, libraries, lawyers, bankers, doctors, and other important classes in the community. A weekly bulletin published by his bureau was sent to a list of about 6,000 persons in all walks of life, a mailing list showed. The list included judges, newspapers, sheriffs, tax assessors and collector, school superintendents, doctors, dentists and others. Libraries also received free copies of the booklet which was designed to sway the public mind to a favorable viewpoint toward public utilities, Bradley said. Fought Shoals Project Questioned about efforts to supervise school books used in Alabama, Bradley said his only move in that direction was reading of text books. He said he found the books to be “reasonably fair” toward utilities and made no attempt to have them revised as did utilities interests in other states, according to earlier evidence. In a series of letters, dated in the fall of 1924 and marked “personal,” exchanged between Bradley and officials of the Alabama Power Company, co-ope: ation of the utilities bureau in efforts to defeat government ownership of Muscle Shoals was disclosed. HEALTH CHIEF HITS FREE CLINIC PLAN
Jackson Favors Periodic Physical Tests for All City Population. Periodic physical examinations through the out-patient division of city hospital for persons unable to pay for the health check was proposed today by Dr. Frederick E. Jackson, city health board president. Dr. Jackson indorsed the periodic health check plan, but warned against the dangers of free clinics, as advocated by certain social agencies. “Persons who actually can not afford to pay for this service should have opportunity to obtain free examinations, but there is no reason why the city or state should offerfree service to those able to pay,” Dr. Jackson said. “We already are offering free medical aid to needy persons through our out-patient department at city hospital. There is no need for additional free clinics, as proposed by advocates of social medicine. “Periodic physical examinations are a good thing and should be employed as a means of determining one’s health reserve. Countries which have tried state medicine have encountered many difficulties. The patient is the person who suffers under the system of social medicine. “The medical profession is glad to give of its service to the poor if it is established that a person is unable to pay for services. All of our out-patient service at city hospital is donated. “Social or state medicine destroys the initiative of the medical profession and allows patients to suffer in the long run. State medicine for the poor should be confined only to preventive medicine. People should pay for health the same as in business.” JUDGES PLAN MEETING Juvenile court problems will be discussed at a conference of Indiana judges at the Spink-Arms next Thursday morning. Speakers will include Judges Frank J. Lahr of Indianapolis, Brenton A. Devol of Frankfort, Bomar Traylor of Jasper, Sol Wood of Ft. Wayne, William C. Wait of Newport and Albert B. Chipman of Plymouth. Judges James A. Collins and Paul C. Wetter of Indianapolis, Joseph W. Todd of Hammond and Cyrus E. Pattee of South Bend.

Hard work and tobacco soon ’will be things of the past, Henry Ford predicts in his latest book “My Philosophy of Industry,” published today. Hard work will be banished because machinery will take over all the tasks, Ford writes, and tobacco will disappear because smoking will become obsolete. Other points in the books are: The “liquor generation” should be allowed to die in silence. Its agonies should not be the constant topic of American journals.
