BOOTH OUSTER BEFORE HIGHEST ‘ARMTJROUP Commander-in-Chief Needs Only 16 Votes to Keep His Office. BY ARCH RODGERS United Pres* Staff Correspondent SUNBURY - ON - THAMES, England, Jan. B.—The high council of the Salvation Army convened today to take up a proposal by Commander Evangeline Booth, to remove her brother. General Bramwell Booth, commander-in-chief, from office. The conference elected Commissioner Hay of New Zealand as chairman. Sixty-three of the sixty-four councilors were present at the opening. Commissioner Oliphant, commanding the army in Italy, was unable to attend because of illness. With Oliphant absent, it will be necessary for General Booth to receive only sixteen votes to retain office. Rules of the army provide that three-fourths of the council must indorse any proposal to remove the commander-in-chief. The high council convened in the ballroom of Sunbury court, which was a dance club before it was purchased by the Salvation Army during the World war. Charles Dickens wrote part of Oliver Twist here, and Thackeray and Lord MaCaulay were frequent visitors. Outside, Sunbury court had a military aspect, resembling a white fortress guarded by members of the army in unifom. Police challenged all entrants, including army members in uniform. Even Commissioner Higgins, chief-of-state, and the Booth family were required to show identification cards. PROBE JCEYES JURY ‘Tampery’ Is Charged in Bribery Trial. By United Press LOS ANGELES. Jan.
