COOLIDGE HAS LARGE TASK ON HIS MOVING DAY Gifts That Have Accumulated in White House Are Problem. By VKA Service WASHINGTON, Jan. 4.—Guests at a very swanky White House reception recently heard the pounding of hammers between the tunes played by the red-coated Marine band. The hammers belonged to packers who have already been called in to assemble the personal belongings of the President, and begin baling and boxing them. February is the traditioanl White House moving month for outgoing Presidents. Official courtesy has always decreed that the attic at least must be ready for the incoming Lares and Penates of the new President in February. Received Many Gifts Both President and Mrs. Coolldge have always graciously declined as many gifts as was possible. Most of the White House menagerie has died off, but even so, Coolidge is taking his moving seriously even this early and seems to regard it as a real undertaking. A President seems rather sure to collect about the same collection of gifts. He always has his dogs and cats and coons and birds *jnt him by various fancier associations, who want to be able to publicly say that one of their breed is at the White House. Hundreds of Gavels He always has his several hundred gavels made from various historic trees or buildings. If he expresses any personal pleasure, such as whistling or whittling or walking or riding, he will find himself showered with whis.les and jackknives and canes an 1 riding habits. Several Dogs Remain But these dogs are left at the White House—Ruby Rough, a silky brown collie; Calamity Jane, a Scotch Sheltie; King Kole, a Belgian Gruendael, and Tiny Tim, the Chow. President and Mrs. Coolidge, it is said, just can’t decide which, if any of the dogs, will follow them to Northampton. Tiny Tim, the stately silent Chow, is said to be the President’s favorite, but Mrs. Coolidge likes funny, frolicksome Calamity Jane.

CAPITAL LEADS IN ‘WHITS WHO’ District of Columbia Has Most Names. By Time* Special WASHINGTON, Jan. 4.—The recent “Who’s Who in America,” with its roster of 28,805 names, credits 1,489 of these to the District of Columbia. There are but five states with a larger total—New York, Massachusetts, Illinois, Pennsylvania and California—all with many times the population of the national capital. One of every 363 persons in Washington is included, while New York’s ratio is one in 1,966, and Massachusetts’ is one in 2,044. In addition to the Princess Cantacuzene, who was born in the White House, there are some ninetytwo women included in Washington’s 1,489 representatives in “Who’s Who.” One is Mary Roberts Rinehart, bom in Pittsburgh, who has been turning out best sellers for the last twenty years.
