GIRL IN TRAIN, m RACE WILL RETURNTO CITY Miss McConnell Plans to Rest in San Francisco, Says Mother. Miss Ruth McConnell, 27-year-old girl whose mysterious fight across the country by train while Dr. D. O. Meeker, a University of Rochester medical student, chased her by plane and train has stirred the press and news services of the country, will return to Indianapolis after a rest in San Francisco, her mother, Mrs. Henry McConnell, 3123 Broadway, said today. Mrs. McConnell explained the girl’s mysterious flight by declaring her daughter has been ill and because of that is “unaccountable for some of her actions.” Dr. Meeker the mother said followed the girl at the request of relatives who were worried about her condition. Mrs. McConnell denied reports that Kenneth B. Coulter, rich Rochester dairyman, is the girl’s suitor and she was fleeing from him. Coulter is a friend of the family. Miss McConnell, who is 27, was staying at the home of friend in San Francisco today, according to a United Press dispatch. She arrived Thursday night by train from New York. Dr. Meeker was due here today from Reno, Nev. He was forced down at Carson City, Thursday night after an airplane flight from Salt Lake City. His attempt to beat Miss McConnell to San Francisco first received nation-wide publicity when he attempted to get a plane at Salt Lake City Wednesday night which would make a night flight west. He was unable to get a plane until Thursday morning. Thursday when his machine was forced down at Carson City, he was “missing” for five hours and officials broadcast for him in the belief his plane had crashed. There was enough helium gas compressed within the three cylinders on the tank car pictured here, at the army field near Washington, to inflate the United States army blimp hovering in the background. These cylinders have a capacity of 206,000 feet of the gas under 2,000 pounds pressure. Before development of this tank car, helium gas was carried in small cylinders, 1,200 of which were necessary to fill an ordinary non-rigid craft.

The experiment is part of the class in zoology at the school. The diet for the pets will be coffee grounds, rolled oats, celery, carrots and molasses. An account of the exact percentage of each food eaten must be kept, and also a count of the worms eating a particular food. The same experiment was carried on by Darwin over a long period of time. ahead with the trial of three Italians, charged with kidnaping Billy Ranieri and demanding $60,000 ransom. Judge Robert Gentzel, presiding at the trial, received a crudely printed note through the mail telling him, ‘Your are too late. You are to die. Quit our case.” A. Frank Ranieri, father of Billy, was warned today that his home would be 'bombed Saturday night unless the prosecution is stopped. This latest warning, one of many that Ranieri has received since the trial started, was mailed to the Ranieri home and telephoned to Ranieri, who is staying at a loop hotel, guarded by several policemen. Ten important witnesses for the state have fled the city or are in hiding because they heard threatening whispers that bombs would be tossed into their homes or their children kidnaped if they aided prosecuting Angelo Petitti, accused as the head of an extortion ring

and on trial for the kidnaping of Billy. Two assistant state’s attorneys have sent their wives and families out of Chicago until the trial is over. They have taken rooms in downtown hotels with police guards always on duty. Both were warned that to prosecute the three Italians would mean death. Mike Devito, a state witness who Thursday said “everybody knew Petitti was the head of a black hand extortion ring,” is scheduled along with Judge Gentzel as the next to die. He received a death threat saying he was to be killed. Despite the threat, Devito testified that Petitti had blackmailed him out of S3OO on threats of bombing his home and abducting his children. Devito said he paid without protest because “he knew the bombings and kidnaping would take place if he did not.” Ole Scully, a relative of the'Ranieris and a witness the state had counted on to enmesh Petitti fur-

ther in the mafia, was slain in a saloon early in the week by five mep who Inquired for him by name and then clubbed and shot him to death.
