‘HUSKIES’ SPEED TO ARCTIC WITH YULETIDE MAIL . / Hazards Faced in/Carrying Cheer to Dwellers in Frozen North. BY CECIL OWEN United Press Staff Correspondent WASHINGTON, Dec. 21.—Over a wilderness of snow, far into the Artie Circle, the United States dog mail team is winding its laborious way with the Christmas mail. More than a month ago, the carrier and his dog team left Kotzbue, southernmost point of the 650-mile route, for Point Barrow, the “jumping off place” of the North American continent. Unless the unforeoeen occurs, the dog team will arrive in Point Barrow just in time for Christmas. Delivering the Alaskan mail in winter is regarded as one of the most hazardous jobs of the postal service, whose annals are crowded with reports of heroic mailmen in all parts of the United States and its possessions. Many Perils Faced Frozen snowbanks, icy winds, pitch black Arctic nights and blinding Alaskan blizzards are some of the hazards encountered on this perilous northern star route. In spite of the hardships of the route, the northbound winter man has been so regular that it is spoken of as “The Christmas Mail.” Barrow is accustomed to associate the coming of Santa Claus with the arrival of the mail carrier. This is a particularly apt comparison because some of the carriers, instead of using dogs, occasionally drive a team of reindeer. For some years, until Alaska is covered with a network of railroads and the air mail is general, the dog musher and his team will continue to be indispensable on the outlying routes. On the Nenana-Iditarod route the dog teams for years have made regular weekly trips, carrying 800 pounds of mail each day with 100 pounds additicjnal in food, equipment, and feed for the hungry huskies. The pay is $863.63 and a round trip consumes about 35 days. The mail service in Alaska covers a distance of more than 8,900 miles, besides the dog mail, all other conceivable types of transportation are used—including the “dog car” which is operated on an abandoned railroad running out of Nome to a mining camp. Here the enterprising Arctic circle mailman hitches his dog team to a hand-car and scoots up the mountain side with the post. AGAINST WIFE~TRADING Judge Scores Two Couples in Suit for Divorce. In a suit for divorce brought by John Kader against his wife who, he charged, left him for another man whose own wife had come to Kader, the judge said: “They divide their children life so many wheelbarrows. They trade them like groceries. Some call two mien their fathers. It’s the most inIhuman thing I’ve heard of in 1,600 divorce cases.”
