AFGHANS REVOLT TO SAVE THEIR BEARDS
P.y United Press NEW YORK, Dec. 21.—The revolt in Afghanistan which started over a razor and a Parisian frock, is teaching King Amanullah that his subjects are willing to fight to keep their beards, persons familiar with the Afghans believe. Dr. Asadollah Beijan, Persian lecturer at Columbia university, said Amanullah’s failure can be laid chiefly to this insistence that men should be required by law to shave their whiskers. The king. Dr. Beijan said, should have followed the example of the Shah of Persia. “When the shah wanted his sub jects to discard their turbans, he didn’t pass a law,” Beijan said. “Instead, he put on a European hat himself and soon all his subjects followed his example. But King Amanullah was too impatient to modernize his country, and the result is that he has a revolt on his hands.” Ali Abker Kiachif, commercial attache to the Persian legation, said Amanullah was making his biggest mistake by passing laws that were

contrary to the religion and traditions of his subjects. “Afghans think the turban originally was sent down from heaven,’ Kiachif said, “and they wear beards because Mohammed wore one. You cannot expect people to give up such things without a struggle.” AT LAST—USE FOR JAZZ Epileptics Organize Band to Keep from Thinking of Selves. By United Press LONDON. TAKE NO CHANCES WITH FLU AND GRIP; CHECK ALL COLDS Local People Warned of Danger in Neglecting Colds While there is no cause for serious alarm over the flu, at the present time, health authorities say that extra precaution should be taken to check every cold at the very start. The safe and effective way to do this is to rub the throat and chest at bedtime with Vicks Vapoßub. Vicks brings relief in two ways: (1) Its ingredients, vaporized by the warmth of the body, are inhaled direct to the infected air-passages. (2) It acts through the skin like a poultice, “drawing out all tightness and pain.” Also snuff Vicks up the nose when going into crowded places. Many cases of flu start from germs being breathed in. Vicks will help keep the air passages in condition to throw off these germ attacks.— Advertisement.

VOODOO DOCTOR FACES QUIZ ON HEADLESS BODY 'Confesses’ Killing Man Officers Later Find Alive; Shot in Effort to Flee. Bn United Press CLEVELAND, Ohio, Dec. 21.—The headless body of a man was held at the county morgue here today while police tried to penetrate the mystery surrounding his death. In Charity hospital, with bullet wounds in both legs was a “voodoo doctor” who is believed to have been implicated in the man’s death although the story he told gave police no light on the mystery. The “voodoo doctor” was shot when he attempted to flee from a

house being watched by Charles Rhodes, detective, and other officers. After he was removed to the hospital the “voodoo doctor” confessed that two days ago he killed Nehemiah Gibbs with a piece of iron, robbed him of $35, then took the body to the basement.of his house and chopped the head off with an ax. A headless body was found by Theolore Arnstead, a roomer, and the head was found in an old cupboard, but police, checking the “doctor’s” story, went to Gibbs’ home and found him alive. Then it was believed the headless body was that of William Gibbs, Nehemiah’s brother but Nehemiah said he slept with William Wednesday night and that the latter was at work when the man was killed. With the man the "voodoo doctor” said he killed, alive, and with the dead man unidentified, police are somewhat doubtful of the "doctor’s” confession. The “doctor,” according to police, was arrested here a year ago for illegal practice of medicine.
