HUSBAND GREAT BURDEN, SAYS WEARY_ GILDA Denies Boag’s Charges That She Started Dancing Career in ‘Honky Tofik.’ By United Press MILWAUKEE, Dec. 20.—Gilda Gray considers a husband the greatest burden an actress can have. Miss Gray, who is here awaiting action on her divorce suit against Gil Boag, New York night club proprietor, indignantly denied she would Marry C.'D. Krepps, her manager, if she gets her divorce from Boag. The suit will be tried in Port Washington, Wis. "I never would marry again,” Miss Gray said. "It has been such a relief to go home after my work and not to have to fear the entrance of a male brute and the terrifying thought ‘he’s drunk again.’ ” When asked if it were true that Boag had helped her in her career as a dancer and motion picture actress, Miss Gray said: “He only has lived off my earnings. His charges concerning my morals are an accurate indication of the elevation of his mind.” She criticised newspaper stories which said she had gotten her start as,.a dancer in a honky-tonk here. “I did not start in a honky-tonk,” she said. “It was a nice theater. I’ve been in honky-tonks over in Paris and I know what they are.”

'Merry Christmas, Gil’ Bil'Unilvd Pn ss NEW YORK, Dec. 20.—Gil Boag, husband of Gilda Gray, held a party at his apartment Wednesday night at which he showed friends the Christmas present he said he received from Gilda, It was a black eye. Boag said two men stopped him outside a nigjht club and said: “Gilda is sorry she can’t get back here for Christmas, so she asked us to give you this.” Then, Boag said, one of the men struck him in the eye. HEARS SCHOOL PLEA & 400 Rural Residents Ask - Relief by Purchase. Hearing was held before County School Superintendent Lee Swails today on a petition of 400 Perry towpship residents seeking to have O. S. Pollard, township school trustee, purchase the property of Wil- • liam H. and Charles Richardson one-half mile north of Southport on Madison' road for a township high .school site. Pollard, according to township residents, made an effort to buy ,* the Richardson property but the owners would not sell. He then se * lected property owned by J. S. Fuett, one-fourth of a mile west of the road for the site. This was objected to and petitioners obtained a promise from the Richardso:'s that they would sell. According to Secretary of State Frederick Schortemeier, representing the remonstrators, the Puett site is not accessible by road and $30;000 would have to be spent to build a road. He stated that a dangerous interurban crossing also would have to be eliminated. Schortemeier urged Swails to order purchase of the Richardson property and direct immediate constiiiction of the school in order to “relieve the terrible portable situation at Southport high school” where all Perry township students are attending school. Swails is expected to rule soon.

PROBLEM OF JAIL-BORN | BABY NEAR SOLUTION 5 . C'liilil Can’t Be Taken to Asylum for Insane With Mother. ]!i/ fjmtrd Press CHICAGO, Dec. 20.—The problem of what to do with Betty Ann Zalis, 2-months-old daughter of Catherine Zalis, who smothered one oi her children and was found insane, neared solution today. Betty Ann was born in jail. Mrs. Zalis has requested that Betty Ann go to a paternal uncle an 1 aunt, Mr. and Mrs. John Zalis, and legal steps are under way to that end. Disposition of the baby has been worrying the courts and the sheriff since the superintendent of the state asylum for the insane announced the child could not be taken there with its mother. Judge Thomas Lynch, who presided at the trial, had ruled that mother and child could not be separated even if the mother was insane. Mrs. Zalis, mother of three, ,ad mitted smothering her second child Cecelia, “because it cried too much.” CALLS I. U. LEADER David Starr Jordan Refers to System Started Forty Years Ago. V V Times Svccial BLOOMINGTON, Ind., Dec. 20. Indiana university is praised as the path finder and trail-blazer of educational reforms, in an interview with David Starr Jordan, “grand old man of science and education,” published by the American Magazine. Forty years ago, says Dr. Jordan, the university adopted as its basic principle the idea that all students should not be fitted to one mold It adopted a plan whereby educations would be fitted to men and women, rather than the reverse. Today this is the accepted scheme of higher education, but forty years ago it was a revolutionary proposition. Dr. Jordan came to Indiana university as a teacher of zoology hr theh ’Bos. He was himself a pioneer in modern methods cf educating, almost from the very first.

CLUBMAN KILLS SELF ON EVE OF MARRIAGE “Inferiority Complex” Believed to Have Caused His Act. By Unit'd Press BUFFALO, Dec. 20.—Thought by police to have been a victim of an “inferiority complex,” Everet Mugler, prominent .clubman here, killed himself on the eve of his wedding day. He was to have been married today to Miss Elizabeth Abbott, a member of one of Buffalo’s oldest and wealthiest families. Mugler shot himself in the head yesterday and died late last night in a hospital. Mugler, who was 28, was the junior partner in a wholesale paper firm here. He was described by members of his family as an “extremely nervous” man.

EXTRADITE DOT FORSLAYING Smuggle Youth to Court for Arraignment. By United Press BUFFALO, Dec. 20—Arthur Leonard, 18-year-old confessed slayer of Mrs. Samuel Jones, wealthy widow of Herricksville, Pa., was returned today to Towanda to face a first degree murder charge. He was taken back to the Pennsylvania city by Charles Rudloff, Bradford county detective. Due to intense feeling against Leonard by residents of the county, Rudloff said, the prisoner will be taken from the train twenty miles this side of Towanda and smuggled into the city by automobile. Leonard confessed the crime in the county penitentiary at Alden to Pennsylvania authorities. He had been sentenced to serve thirty days by a Buffalo judge for carrying a concealed weapon. The sentence was commuted on presentation of extradition papers. He was arrested here the day following the murder.
