JUDGE ASSAILS VIOLATORS OF TRAFFICRULES Cameron Amazed by Lack of Observance on Part "i of Business Men. “It is amazing how many business men of this city pay no attention to the traffic ordinance,” said Municipal Judge C, R. Cameron today, in hearing the case of M. Van Osley, 233 East Ohio street, charged with failure to stop at New York street, preferential highway, on Alabama street. “I believe you are telling the truth when you say you stopped behind a wagon,” the judge said to Van Osley, “and I believe you are telling the truth when you say you did not see him stop,” the judge said to Motorcycle Officer J. F. O’Brien, “but there are too many violations of this kind. “Only this morning I stood at that very corner and observed that only about one out of every five was stopping. “It is the duty of every business man, and every other citizen, to help police enforce this ordinance There have been probably 5,000 per • sons injured in automobile accidents since the first of the year and nearly .100 killed, and a large percentage of this is due to persons who drive straight through preferential streets.” Judge Cameron continued Van Osley's case indefinitely. William S. Vawter, 408% Massachussetts avenue, and Mrs. Flossi 3 Siebert, 4964 Schofield avenue, were fined $5 each for traffic violations Ed Eberhardt, Friendswood, Ind., was fined $1 and costs because the license plates on the car of a relative, which he was driving, were so muddy they could not be read. Emil Jannings in Second Place, According to Reviewers. By Times Special NEW YORK, Dec. 18.—The flashing, sabre-like John Gilbert is standing at the top of the motion picture world today, and Emil Jannings of the bulky figure and the hair-line emotional nuances is close beside him. They are: Marion Davies —“The Cardboard Lover” and “The Patsy." Louise Dresser—“ Mother Knows Best” and “His Country." Greta GarOo —“Mysterious Lady” and “The Divine Woman.” Janet Gaynor—“ Street Angel” and “Four Devils.” Jean Hersholt—“Jazz Mad” and “Abie's Irish Rose.” Thomas Meighan—“The Racket” and “The Mating Call.” William Powell—“ The Drag Net” and “Interference.” Fay Wray—“The Wedding March” and “Legion of the Condemned." BEATS TEACHER; JUSTJCEJOILED Father Who Helped Son Slips Officers. By United Press DICKSON, Tenn., Dec. 18.— Christmas-business is so good at the Slayton Phillips store here that Phillips twice has refused to be arrested on a charge of aiding in an assault on a high school professor. “Too busy,” was the answer deputy sheriff’s twice brought back to county court when they sought to taka the man in custody for standing guard with a shotgun while hi.-. 19-year-old son, Tony, thrashed Prof. W. L. Rochelle. “They had more papers than they had officers,” Phillips confided to friends in explaining how he eluded arrest. The sheriffs’ office explained that any enforced arrest of the man might have resulted in gun-fire, ioi Phillips admittedly is “mad.” Accompanied by his son, who was expelled from high school Saturday for refusing to “squeal” on a fellow student who exploded firecrackers on the campus, Phillip.', confronted the professor and demanded the boy’s reinstatement.
