ASSAILS HINES VETERANPOLICY Manner of Placing Officers on Retired List Hit. By Times Special WASHINGTON, Dec. 14.—General Frank T. Hines, director of the United States veteran’s bureau, and other bureau officials are being criticised by Representative Roy G. Fitzgerald of Ohio for the manner in which emergency army officers are being placed on the retired list. Under the Tyson-Fitzgerald bill, which was passed by congress over the veto of President Coolidge last May, all persons who served as officers of the army, navy, or mafine corps during the World war, other than as regular officers, are entitled to be placed on a retired list and receive 75 per cent of their pay if they incurred 30 per cent physical disability in line of duty. Fitzgerald charged today that the veterans’ bureau has been laggard in carrying out the provisions of the act and said hundreds of protests are being received at his office. “The intentions of congress are being thwarted by the bureau,” Fitzgerald said. He criticised Director Hines for tardiness in requesting John G Sargent, Attorney General to interpret legal question. The production of malt syrup in 1926 was 438,000,000 pounds, and last year it was 450,000,000 pounds.

Achieving a boyish figure a peril to health for many Men and •women injuring themselves by starvation diet
THE passing fad of dieting to reduce weight is permanently injuring the health of girls, women and men in the opinion of eminent medical authorities. How dangerously serious dieting has become may be judged from the following statement by a famous doctor. He says: “Many young women to whom motherhood has been denied have come to me to learn the reason why. I have to tell them, only too often, that they have sacrificed their children for the sake
of a boyish figure.” This doctor goes on to show that many adults, both men and women, do injury to themselves by starvation diets from which they can never recover. It is time to call a halt in this dangerous practice. Whoever said that two persons could have the same standard of weight? Medical science now declares that standardization in the weight of human beings is impossible, as well as undesirable. Eat enough of a great variety of foods and enjoy them. Remember that sugar is the ideal flavorer of other foods and that it adds greatly to the zest and pleasure of eating. Sugar is also a food—the most inexpensive and purest known. Don’t be afraid to sweeten grapefruit, oranges, cereals, dried fruits, and all canned vegetables. Delightful flavors demand sugar. Enjoy eating. The Sugar Institute.

NAILS IN STOLEN CORN Arrest Follows Marking by Theft Victim Near Goldsmith. By Times Special GOLDSMITH, Ind., Dec. 14.—Authorities believed they have “nailed” a corn thief with arrest of Harry Foster, a farmer near here. Mark Parks had reported corn being stolen from a crib at his farm. Sheriff Louks advised him to place nails in ends of several ears and await a return visit of the thief. More corn was missed and Parks made the rounds of nearby farms. In a hog lot at Foster’s place, he found cobs with nails in the ends. Foster’s arrest followed. He is awaiting trial.
