HUNDREDS ILL IN INDIANA AS ‘FLirSPREADS New Cases Develop and Several Deaths Are Reported. With hundreds of new cases and several deaths reported, the influenza epidemic in Indiana today had reached alarming proportions. Reports from various sections of the state said that the malady had spread with great rapidity in the past twenty-four hours, and that health authorities contemplated drastic measures in an effort to curb the disease. Wabash college at Crawfordsville has been closed after it was reported that nearly one-third of the student body and ten members of the faculty were afflicted with the disease, a total of 160. Marion reported that approximately 3,000 persons were afflicted with the disease there. Several city schools and county schools have been closed as a precautionay measure, Dr. J. F. Loomis, Marion city health commissioner said. From Columbia City came reports of the absence of nearly 10 per cent of the city’s school enrollment. Authorities said that the malady, however, had not reached such proportions as to warrant closing schools. Officials of De Pauw university at Greencastle, ha\ r e announced that no more chapel or public gatherings would pe held. One hundred and seventeen cases have been reported among the students. Lebanon reported that nearly 200 school children were ill with the disease. Officials intimated that the city schools may be closed. Hatford City said the epidemic ' Is waning but nearly 150 persons are ! still receiving treatment. Goodland health officials said that a mild wave had invaded the town, but so far it had not reached epidemic proportions. Only a few public meetings are being held. The Calumet district reported many cases, and said that in some instances school attendance had been seriously hampered by the disease.

HARRY MICHAEL was fined $1 and costs at Princeton for what he said was an act of charity. Arriving from Robinson, 111., to visit an aged woman friend, Michael told police he found her destitute. He bought groceries, but could find no coal yard so he could obtain fuel. Taking a gunny sack, he went to a coal car on a railroad siding. That’s where the police found him.
