Undercurrent of Ineligibility Talk Heard as Coaches Hold Meeting. M’LAIN UNDER FIRE Harsh Gossip Expected to Halt, Griffith Says. BY DIXON STEWART United Press Staff Correspondent CHICAGO. Dec. 7.—Fortified by a two weeks’ relaxation since the close of the Big Ten football campaign, Western Conierence football coaches, athletic directors and faculty advisors gathered here today for their annual conclave. Ostensibly a friendly session for making schedules and discussing questions pertaining to the welfare of conference athletics, the meeting may develop a fight over eligibility of players and charges of professionalism. Veiled Charges Each institution is interested chiefly in athletic success and the representatives will be fighting to protect the interests of their respective institutions. Many veiled charges of ineligibility were bandied about during the 1928 football season and there is a possibility that some of these will be brought into the open. Rumors that rival Big Ten schools will make an effort to bar Mayes McLain, lowa’s Indian star, have resulted in apprehension over the possibility that “professionalism” will be aired. Griffith Tells View Regarding today’s meeting Major John L. Griffith, western conference commissioner, said: “It is probable that proselyting wiii be mentioned. It has been brought up at every sessfbn for more meetings back than I can remember. There always is a discussion of it. but never any explosion.” With football dates already fairly well ironed out by adoption of a four year round robin schedule, and the setting of dates for other sports coming under the head of minor business, the meeting promises little excitement if the eligibility row is submerged., The confab began this morning with football and baseball coaches in session. Intramural directors, track coaches and publicity men also met. Other Sessions A joint session of athletic directors and football coaches was held at 1:30 p. m. Other meetings this afternoon included sessions for wrestling, track, basketball, fencing and gymnastic coaches. Faculty representatives from the various schools meet tonight in joint session with the athletic directors. Ticket managers, swimmig and hockey coaches and athletic directors are scheduled for meeting Saturday. SACRED HEART GAMES The Sacred Heart high school net team scored another success bv defeating the Manual Hatchets, 25 to 20. The Senior girls played the Commercial team, winning at 7 to 3. Tonight, at Sacred Heart gym. the boys’ five plays the Meyer Chapel big team. The Senior girls will play the Sophomore team. Games will be at 8 and 9-o’clock.

Coast Colleges Held Up Slates for Notre Dame By United Press LOS ANGELES, Dec. 7.—Knute Rockne’s power is still felt on the Pacific Coast even though his “fighting Irish” were humbled last week by the Trojans. Pending Rockne’s decision whether or not Notre Dame will play the University of Southern California in 1929, coast conference schedule makers assembled here to draft the 1929 football slate, languished in idleness. General Manager Gwinn Wilson of Southern California is now in South Bend conferring with Notre Dame officials concerning a possible intersectional tilt between the two schools next year.
