“This is one of the most astounding statues ... It has the simplicity and forthrightness of a medieval conception of an early Christian martyr ... It has expressed the inward ideals of Lincoln in terms of the phsyical.” So said George H. Ainslie (right), president of one of the oldest art firms in America, in accepting this bronze nude of Lincoln. The sculptor, shown at the left, is 80-year-old Merton Olivette, well known to New York’s Greenwich villagers.

LIEBER LASHES AT BILLBOARDS Chicago Advertising Agency Refused indorsement. When E. L. Ballew of the Outdoor Advertising Agency, 6 North Michigan avenue, Chicago, sought the opinion of Richard Lieber, head of the state conservation department, Regarding the use of billboards along streets and highways he failed to secure an indorsement. His company is engaged in erection of standard billboards throughout the country. In answer to Ballew’s inquiry, Lieber sent a three-page letter roundly condemning billboards and asserting that for the most part they are unwanted. He even cited authorities, such as municipal ordinances and civic club action. Briefly, Lieber’s opinion regarding billboards, is contatined in the following paragraph from the letter: “Billboards along our highways are not only a blot on nature—no matter how skillfully executed —but they are highly confusing to the driver, if not a direct menace to his safety and that of the other occupants of the automobile.”
