SUES EDUCATOR FOR $250,000 AS LOVE BALM I Accused by Stenographer, Who Says He Spent $75,000 on Her. Bn United Press ' * NEW YORK, Dec. 4.—A former Tennessee collese president’s success in persuading a young stenographer she should get a divorce may cost him $250,000. The suit, charging breach of promise, has been filed against Dr. David Earl Mitchell, former president of Cumberland university, Lebanon, Tenn., by Mrs. Mary J. Collins of Brooklyn, who asserted Dr. Mitchell made a whirlwind courtship begininng in 1925 in which he spent more than $75,000 on her and sent her more than 750 letters and telegrams. Existence of the suit was reveale'd Monday when the state supreme court heard arguments on a motion to force Dr. Mitchell to reveal his whereabouts for questioning by Mrs. Collins’ attorneys before trial. The former President’s attorney said he did not know his client’s address at present, but expected to learn it soon. Judgment was reserved. Mrs. Collins charged that Dr. Mitchell gave her $5,000 to go to Reno and divorce her husband, said to be a naval officer. She went after ardent protestations of his love, she said, and returned to find him eager to marry her. During the next few months he gave her a house, automobiles, jewelry and cash valued at well over $75,000, and wrote frequently during his travels of his love. Dr. Mitchell was chosen president of Cumberland when he was 26, and was said to be the youngest college president in America. He was elected almost immediately after his graduation from the school because of his activities in obtaining endowments while a student. Dr. Mitchell was considered worth a small fortune before entering college at 24. FUNDS ASKED TO LIGHT CIRCLE MONUMENT $10,500 Requested From Budget Committee. Col. Oran Perry, superintendent of the Soldiers’ and Sailors’ Monument, has requested $10,500 from the state budget committee .for a new lighting system for the memorial. An' electric company already has drawn specifications and estimates on an illumination plan. Work will be begun as soon as funds are available if the legislature appropriates the money. HEN S’, SQUAWK LATE Alarm Fails, Chickens Don’t —But Thief Gets Roost. The electric burglar alarm in the henhouse of Mark Bottoms, 4901 Fletcher avenue, failed to work early today, but his chickens gave him notice of their departure. Bottoms has a system of wires leading from his chicken coop to a bell in his bedroom. The bell failed to ring when chicken thieves got into the coop at 5 a. m., but he heard the squawking of his chickens. He ran to the back yard in time to see a man running from the henhouse. . The thief escaped with Bottoms’ chickens. HOLD CHOKING SUSPECT Negro Found Hiding Near a Building on North New Jersey. Charles Bridwell, 21, Negro, 1216 East Nineteenth street, was held under high bond at city prison today charged with vagrancy. He is suspected of being the Negro who choked and robbed Miss Sarah Stewart, 826 North New Jersey street, in the bedroom of her home, early Monday. Bridwell was arrested at 1:30 a. m. by Sergeant Homer Dailey and Patrolman Gleen Mangus. They found him crouched against a building in the 900 block on North New Jersey street. When Bridwell attempted to escape Mangus stopped him with a flying tackle. POLICE SEEK ‘MASHER’ Molests School Girl, She Tells Principal, Cops Have Auto Number. Police today are seeking a young man who Monday attempted to force his attentions on a girl pupil of School 66, Park avenue and Maple Road boulevard. The man entered the school Monday morning, conversed with the girl, and returned at noon recess. He met her near the school. Frightened, she ran back to the school. Later, the man telephoned the school principal and asked for the girl’s address. Police say the license on the auto he was driving was issued to a fictitious address.
