GOVERNMENT'S VESTRIS PROBE NEARSJLQSE Testimony to Place Blame for Sea Tragedy Due to End Today. BY HARRY FERGUSON (United Press Staff Correspondent) NEW YORK, Nov. 30.—Satisfied that he has “perpetuated the record” of the sinking Vestris, Charles H. Tuttle, federal district attorney, ■will close his investigation today into the disaster which claimed 111 lives. •The hearing, which started a day after the survivors from the Lamport & Holt liner landed in New York, has been in progress eleven days. Forty-four witnesses have been examined, and two or three more probably will take the stand today. Interest now centers on the report which Francis O’Neill,' United States commissioner, will submit. That report will determine whether there is any basis for criminal indictments. It will be supplemented by a finding by Captain E. P. Jessop, U. S. N. retired, who is the nautical expert representing the United States government. Jessop may make his report today if < le testimony is concluded in time. Tuttle made it clear the inquiry was started for the sole purpose of making the testimony available for any legal or criminal proceedings which might arise. The second inquiry into the Vestris sinking also may close today. That is the one being conducted by the steamboat inspection service of the department of commerce. Dickerson N. Hoover, assistant secretary of commerce, who is in charge of the investigation, said he expected to summon several wit. nesses today. His inquiry is concerned only with whether the Vestris was adequately inspected by federal agents before she sailed. Hoover also will submit a report. will take office at the end of the provisional term in February, 1930. Forty thousand persons will witness the inaugural, and high officials representing the army, governors of states and diplomats of various nations will attend. The act announcing the election of Portes Gil will be read to a joint session of congress opening at noon. Portes Gil, elected to replace the assassinated President-elect General Alvaro Obregon, then will take the oath of office and address the congress with his first executive message. Labor forces are confident he will push forward the cause of workmen in Mexico, because he has furthered the proposed labor code improving the status of laborers. A two-day holiday will be observed throughout the country and tribute will be paid in the city to the retiring President Calles by labor, political and civic organizations. Portes Gil has been assured of full support of military leaders throughout Mexico and there was an official statement issued by the military forces that assured him of their loyalty.
