‘CHI' NIGHT LIFE IS HARD HIT BY SWEEPINGRAIDS Underworld Worried for Fear Law Really Means ! Business. By United Press CHICAGO, Nov. 30.—Chicago today was having its greatest cleanup campaign in history. Authorities were taking liquor and gambling devices away from proprietors of beer flats, speakeasies, and cases at such an alarming rate that some of the latter were almost convinced the campaign was to be taken seriously. Some 325 Chicagoans were interrupted in their Thanksgiving festivities by a concerted police drive on night clubs, and gambling houses. Ordinarily “drives” by the city police do not cause a great deal of consternation among bootleggers and gamblers here. Past experience has shown that the furore generally dies down in a few days. Women Not Spared This time, however, other factors must be reckoned with. Next week marks the induction Into office of John A. Swanson, new state’s attorney and anew staff of prosecutors. The humble beer flat, which sells home brew to augment the family income, also suffered heavily, 127 of the raid victims coming from those sources. Neither were women immune. If they were in the flats or saloons at raiding time they went to the station along with the men. “It won’t last,” is the word going about the anti-Volstead circles, but there were a lot of tongues in a lot of cheeks when it was repeated. Not So Amusing Now With anew sheriff, John Traeger, In office promising to clean up the roadhouses in the county and Judge Swanson on the horizon, there was doubt in the tone of the erstwhile pat saying. Swanson is sworn to rid the city of gangsters, racketeers and bootleggers. He was elected on that platform and in a half dozen statements since has emphasized that he appreciates the responsibility. Thus when the bartenders, gamekeepers and beer flat operators were taken to police stations all over the city after the raids, the customary cynical smiles were absent. The “big shots” weren’t on hand to provide bail and wield their influence. They were having troubles of their own. Some of them are reported to have left town to establish headquarters on the edge of the city, out of the jurisdiction of the new state’s attorney, but still near enough to carry on their business here.

ARRAIGNMENT OF M'MANUS HELD UP: JAIL BUDDY Accused of Rothstein Slaying He Pays Youth’s Fine; Ignores Charge. By United Press NEW YORK, Nov. 30.—Formal arraigment of George McManus for the murder of Arnold Rothstein was continued today until next Wednesday, with consent of the stocky gambler and his attorneys. Meanwhile, “Tough Willie” McCabe, another of the gambling fraternity, surrendered to police today. He was held as a material witness under SIO,OOO bail. He will make bail later today and be released, to reappear ner.t week. Under the affidavit filed against McManus Tuesday, the formal arraignment had to come within forty-eight hours. The time was extended to today an account of Thanksgiving and tycManus agreed to further extension as the district attorney’s office requested. McManus was slightly nervous when he appeared before Judge Mancuso in general sessions, but did show some of the confidence and cockiness he generally exhibits. As usual he had little to say. While McManus was appearing before Judge Mancuso, the county grand jury was meeting in a room

While McManus was in the homicide court building he saw Salvatore Salidano and asked him: “What are you in for, kid?” The younth explained he was serving a two-days’ sentence in lieu o f a $5 fine for improper parking. McManus grunted, reached in his pocket, pulled out a great roll of bills and tossed a SSO bill to a patrolman. “Pay the kid’s fine,” he said. He walked away without asking for his change.

THOUSANDS SEE RADIO OPERATE THREINIUTOS Wireless Wizard Proves His Skill in Downtown Exhibition. Three driverless automobiles were operated by radio control at noon Friday, in North Meridian street between Washington street and Monument circle. Two of the cars were operated at the same time and actually were controlled in motion in opposite directions. The third machine was steered right, left and forward. tory of the world that two cars were controlled by radio at one time. Francill is the only person ever to accomplish the experiment. In operating two cars at once, Francill performed what many times has been called the riddle of all radio. This is because he used only one broadcast station or unnsmitter, one wave length and one electro-magnetic wave, or wireless impuse at a time. •However, he was able to perform either the identioel or different operation of the cars simultaneously, singly, or in a unison, or in any combination of numbers he desired. For instance, he would tap the key of his “magic box,” or transmitter- -a small wooden cabinet held in his hands. There would be a hissing spark. In a cabinet on a running beard of each car there would be an audible click. Instantly, the lights would flash on one car, or the motor start on the other. Or, the motors would start on both cars, or an electric windshield wiper would start into action on one and a horn sound on the other. The climax of this phase of the wizard’s performance came when he attempted probably the most difficult feat in the realm of radio con-

These volunteers searched all three automobiles inside and out and announced to the assemblage that there were no concealed drivers and that the machines were standard, stock model cars in every respect.
