MERCY SHIP OF NORTHLAND TO GO JJNJLOCK Coast Guard Cutter 'Bear' Has Served Faithfully for 50 Years. BY EARL H. LEIF United Press Staff Correspondent OAKLAND, Cal., Nov. 29.—For more than half a century the coast guard cutter “Bear” has roamed the northern sea lanes in the services of her country and now is about to be sold to the highest oidder. At least that was the original order, but it shall not be executed if the men who trod her decks on the long Arctic cruises can make their voices heard through the labyrinth of “official channels” to the landsmen in charge of such matters in the nation’s capital. The tradition of the Bear Is famous in the Northland. Men reckoned the coming of spring by her arrival when she turned her pros’ southward. All Things to All Men The Bear brought medicine to the ailing, law to the lawless, food to the hungry, mail to the exiled miners. She policed the sealing fields and rescued the shipwrecked. The Bear first went to sea in 1874 at a Scotland shipyard where she was launched, a three-masted barkrigged steamer of sturdy yet trim design. A few years later she was plowing northward under the colors of the United States, in the navy, as flagship of the Greeley relief expedition. Other great explorers knew her well. Welcome Sight to Explorer Steffanson, exploring the Arctic wastes, knew he had reached the outer fringes of civilization when his bedraggled crew first sighted her ballooning canvas above the ice floes. The ship’s doctor performed every kind of minor and major operation, the chaplain married the natives and conducted ' ;ral services. In short, the Bear and her personnel performed a thousand and one services in the name of government and humanity. Probation Officer Named By Times Special CROWN POINT, Ind., Nov. 29. Judge E. Mills Norton has named Mrs. Mary E. Murphy, Hammond, as Lake county probation officer. Mrs. Murphy succeeds Mrs. Charles Rosen, who resigned to become matron Os the county detention home here.

Physicians say the boy’s growth is caused by an over-active pituitary gland and believe Robert’s height will reach nine feet.
Cuticura Heals Severe Itching Burning Pimples " My trouble started with pimples on my face. They were large, very red and hard. The itching and burning were very severe, causing loss of sleep. Some nights I had to sit up and scratch, and scratching caused eruptions that disfigured my face. The trouble lasted a couple of months. >“I tried other remedies but without success, I read an advertisement for Cuticura Soap and Ointment and sent for a free sample. It seemed to help me so I purchased more, and after using two cakes of Cuticura Soap and two boxes of Cuticura Ointment I was completely healed (Signed) Miss Ellen A. Cards, Tabor, S.
