Radio HIGH VOLTAGE WIRES‘GUM UP' RADIO IN CITY Interference Is Serious in Northwestern Section, Check Shows. A thorough check by The Times interference man has been made out the trouble around Thirty-sixth - street and Northwestern avenue, on the T. H. I. & E. high lines running east and west on Thirty-sixth street and turning south at 1300 West Thirty-sixth to Twenty-sixth street, west to Harding street, south to White river. The survey showed that the lines are high voltage ones for the Lebanon lines on the T. H. I. & E.. They carry 28,000 volts on this line. Radio listeners have reported that at different hours there is a very bad interference. After checking the power plant chants, I find that every night, starting at 11:55 and continuing until 12:05, (ten minutes) the power plant charges the plant lightning arresters. Then again from 4 to 4:10 p. m. the same charging 4 s done again. Between these hours, the substations charge their lightning arresters on all four lines. Each line has several substations and the same interference can be heard here in several parts of the city, caused by charging of these arresters. The other high voltage lines leaving the plant are as follows: The Martinsville line, 33,000 volts, west on Tenth street to Holmes avenue, then to the Belt railroad yards, Warman avenue to Oliver avenue, then to the city limits. The Dan-ville-Brazil lines, 33,000 volts, run the same direction, two lines on same poles, two sets of 33,000-volt lines to Oliver avenue station. There they separate. The Crawfordsville line, 33,000 volts, goes west on Tenth street to the power house, west across to Speedway City, then northwest. The four sections of lines owned by the traction company cover many miles of Indiana, and have several small power substations along the route. Any interference made by these stations would be broadcast in Indianapolis. This brand of interference may be heard in several section o&lndianapolis by many radio fans. One need not live near the lines to hear a 28,000 or 38,000-volt charge cut in on lightning arresters. Around Thirty-six street in the 1300 block, where the 28,000-volt line turns east, is a network of wires. The lower wires are owned by the Indianapolis Power and Light Company, 4,100 volt lines, 2,100 arc light lines and others, directly above tlTbm, are the traction 2,800-vdlt. It is the belief of the inerference man that the trouble the last few days has been due to excessive moisture. On the days it rained the interference was reported the loudest. Friday night, after a shower, the trouble was a frying and faint popping sound, like wires running through trees wpuld sound on radio, probably due to bad insulation or dampness. This line has been up for fifteen years and there may be bad insulation that will take daytime survey to show up. The trouble has been fully reported to those believed responsible.

Radio WSAI IS GIVEN HOPEOFJIELIEF New Channel Likely for Cincinnati Station. BY LEO R. Sr> K Timrs Staff Corres ndcr.t WASHINGTON, Nov. 9. -A week’s trial of the new rad allocations hc.3 justified the change, in the opinion of Radio Commissioner O. H. Caldwell. The change, Caldwell realizes, has not satisfied everyone and there still is much disappointment from fans whose favorite stations have been affected adversely. On the whole, however, the change has greatly improved reception, Caldwell believes. Commissioner Caldwell may takf steps this week to have the commission improve some of the outstanding disappointments in the new allocation. He will seek to have five additional cleared channels authorized, one for each zone, by lowering the power of some stations to restore outstanding stations to their former • -estige. If the new channels are cleared one will be assigned to WSAI of Cincinnati, a pioneer station, and another to WGY of Schenectady. “We expected to be flooded with letters of complaint,” Caldwell said, "but instead, we find that the change, generally, is being praised.
