PACKINGHOUSE WASTE TURNED INTOHAIR PINS Have You a Little Cow-Hide in Your Auto? Better Look! Many people, who know something of the size and scope of the Kingan & Cos. packing house, never have stopped to consider what becomes of the so-called waste material from the large slaughter that takes place daily in the large Indianapolis plant. The proverbial “butcher, the baker and the candlestick maker,” all play a roll in the lengthy drama that begins with the purchase of cattle, sheep, and hogs and terminates in products ranging from hair pins, buttons, gloves, tennis rackets, and medicine in addition to the actual meat which occupies the center of the stage. Help Cure Diabetes What the average person would term “waste product” is sold to manufacturing concerns that in turn produce many common-place articles. Bones become brush handles, hairpins and knife handles. Hides go to the tanner and eventually appear as automobile upholstery, gloves and harness. The fats and oils, unsuitable for food, are made into soap and lubricants. Within recent years, the medical fraternity has discovered a relief for diabetes in a formula supplied by the pancreatic glands. Hog liver recently has been used successfully in the treatment of anemia. Not even the blood from the butchered stock is wasted. It becomes fertilizer and digester tankage. Fmploys 3,000 Penons Approximately 3,000 persons are employed by Kingan & Cos. It is said to be one of the six largest meat packing concerns in the world. Many an American tourist is credited with having purchased a ’•European’’ ham, lugged it carefully home and then discovered a Kingan label o nthe article. Foreign markets include, Ireland. England. France, Germany, Holland. Italy and India. Thomas Kingan, one of the founders of the firm in 1862, is claimed to have first worked and successfully applied the theory of artificial refrigeration to cutting, curing and packing of meats.
