Radio GIFT OF LARGER QUARTERS WILL AID RADIO CLUB Organization to Branch Out, Extend Its Help to Students. After being held in cramped quarters, which has restricted ambitions of the Indianapolis Radio Club to have a large and increasing membership, the club has been fortunate in having an “angel” come to the rescue C. F. Schmidt, owner of the Century building, long has been an enthusiastic radio fan. When he heard of the club’s difficulties in finding a suitable place to hold its meetings, he solved the difficulty in a positive and generous fashion. He donated, free of charge, for as long as the club wishes it, one of the largest rooms on the fourth floor of the Century building. The number of the room is 460. Schmidt is interested in amateur radio to the extent that he believes every boy who desires to learn more about radio should be given a chance to get as thorough and technical a knowledge of the science as is possible. With the new clubroom, and all the space it needs, the club is setting out in earnest to provide the instruction and social possibilities that have been a long-felt want in the organization. Size of the meeting place no longer will be a barrier to a large number of would-be students of “ham” radio. Scheduled for Monday night, Nov. 19, is a talk and practical demonstration on the calibration and use of radio instruments. in a few weeks the club plans to open a code school for any of the public who wish to come. This is Qxnected to be a welcome bit of news for the broadcast listener who has become tired of a range of one .continent on his radio set and dies for the thrills of international reception. ENDS SECOND YEAR AS BRAZIL PRESIDENT Execuitve Observes Day on 39th Anniversary of Republic. Bit United Press RIO DE JANEIRO, Nov. 15. Washington Luiz Pereira de Souza today ended the first half of his four-year administration as Brazil’s thirteenth president while the nation celebrated the thirty-ninth anniversary of the proclamation of the republic. Brazil became independent from Portugal an Sept. 7, 1822, but remained an empire until Nov. 15, 1889, when Dom Pedro II was deposed, and Marshal Deodore da Fonseca, in behalf of the army, proclaimed the republic. The change in form of government was effected without loss of life. The navy later rebelled, but without success. President Washington Luiz, as he is known, is one of the most popular of recent executives, and his administration has already been marked by two outstanding accomplishments: The stabilization of the currency and the development of good roads connecting important cities. Predict Severe Winter Throughout Indiana large numbers of blackbirds are now gathering in preparation for their annual trip southward to the warmer climates. Old residents say this migration usually does not take place before the latter part of November, declare it is an omen of an early winter and a severe one.

Hatfield-Balkite Radio Set Stands Up Under Most Exacting Experiments
New Outfit, Rugged Type, Gives Splendid Tone Volume Control. BY TIMES RADIO EDITOR, _ One of the latest sets to make its bow in Indianapolis is the HatfieldBalkite, a seven-tube all-electric set offered by the Hatfield Electric Company. This set was tested during the last week by The Times Radio Editor, in response to many requests. This new Balkite product is of the latest design, embodying many original features and is offered in one model only, a walnut finish console. The chasis of this set is of very rugged construction, completely shielded, employing the best of workmanship. The Balkite engineers have designed the set to operate with the 227 or indirect heater type of tube thereby eliminating all line noise and power hum, with ample volume to fill the entire house. During the week this set was tested, many stations were logged for the first time, including Evansville and several stations in Philadelphia. The new Balkite is very selective and the many stations under the new allocation are easy to separate within one point on the dial. Tuning is very simple, as the set employs only one dial and a volume control. The Balkite engineers have provided a large drum dial with ample space to mark stations on the dial directly opposite the number at which each station is received, thereby providing a complete log of all stations on the dial. Another feature of this set is the tone volume control on the speaker. The Newcomb-Hawley dynamic power cone is equipped with a small rheostat which gives the operator soft, loud, or medium tone as desired. The speaker also gives that much-sought-after deep bass tone, which may be adjusted to the listener’s satisfaction by use of the speaker vclume control. During the week stations were tuned in from coast to coast, including KFI, Los Angeles, which came in with almost as much vol-

BLACKMER TO KEEPREFUGE France Will Refuse U. S. Extradition Request. By United Press PARIS, Nov. 15.—France will reject the American government’s request for the extradition of Henry M. Blackmer, wanted in the United States on an income tax charge, the United Press learned in highly authontative quarters today. The producer-general today turned all of the papers in the case ever to the accusations court and the court is expected to cite two grounds in throwing out the request It is pointed out that the French law limit extradition to within three years of the commission of the crime, whereas five years nave passed in the Blackmer case and also that the offense of making a false statement in a fiscal statement, which was the basis of the American request, is not punishable in France. While it is virtually certain that the court will reject the American
request, United States treasury department attorneys and official re-
