PRESS BRANDS LINER TRAGEDY i ‘SEAMURDEP’ Signed Stories of Survivo - : Lash Captain, Crew for Disaster. Bn United Press NEW YORK, Nov. 15.—New York newspapers, without exception, “played up” the criticism of the ship’s crew and the bitterness of passengers in their accounts today of the Vestris disaster. Headlines, in huge black type, bore the words ‘‘Sea Murder,” “Criminal Negligence” and “Cowardice.” The more sensational papers carried the luridness to the greatest extent allowable. But even the conservative New York Times, with the exception of one Washington dispatch about President-Elect Hoover, devoted its first fifteen pages enitrely to the shipwreck story. Typical excerpts from the stories of the reporters themselves follow: “The sea, consecrated to the tradition of high heroism, gave up a dreadful tale of craven cowardice, imbecile blundering and ruthless inhumanity unique in history yesterday.”—Daily News (tabloid). “Survivors, on the verge of breakdowns because of their ghastly experiences in shark-infested waters, were outspoken in laying the blame for the tragedy at the door of the dead captain and "his officers . . . . It was the grimmest epic of the seas since the Lusitania was sunk.”Times. “It was ‘women and children first’ •—first to die—aboard the S. S. Vestris when the leaky old tub rolled over and sank. . . . the aged Cap tain Carey virtually committed suicide by jumping into the sea without a life preserver.”—Mirror (Tabloid).

MBS. HOOVER GOING ALONG TO SOUTHAMERICA President-Elect to Remove All ‘High Hat’ in Good Will Tour. BY THOMAS L. STOKES United Press Staff Correspondent PALC ALTO, Cal., Nov. 15.-President-elect Hoover hopes to establish through his Latin-American tour the neighborly custom of an exchange of visits between the heads of those countries and the United States. To that end, he will invite officials in the various central and South American countries he visits to come to the United States as the guests of the nation during his administration as President, it was learned today. Removes All “High Hat” These invitations will be extended personally, and thus will carry the cordiality added by the personal touch. Hoover wants to remove all “high hat” atmosphere from his visit. He has requested the state department that he go as a private citizen instead of as official representative of the United States. He has decided to take Mrs. Hoover along with him. Mrs. Hoover will be accompanied by her private secretary, Miss Ruth Fessler, of Duluth, Minn., who like the President-elect and Mrs. Hoover, is a graduate of Stanford university. These will be the only women aboard the battleship Maryland. Their presence will be contrary to established custom in the American navy, but exceptions have been made. Plans Nicaragua Visit Hoover’s iuea in inviting officials of Latin American nations to visit the United States while he is President goes beyond his own administration in purpose. He would like to see it a permanent custom for heads of the various countries in the western hemisphere to visit one another, a custom of European nations for centuries. Hoover has broadened the scope of his tour to include a visit to Nicaragua, as it was indicated several days ago by the United Press, with his visit to Mexico. ‘DEAR SENATOR’ IS FRUIT OF THE TREE

McCready Huston Uses a Very Modern Rotten Political Background for His Latest Novel. BY WALTER D. HICKMAN SENATOR DAN MEREDITH, classified as “Empire’s leading Harding man,” was the fruit of the modern rotten political tree. You will meet Dan Meredith, who posed as “Honest Dan” to the voters, in McCready Huston's novel, “Dear Senator,” recently published by the Bobbs-Merrill Company. Let me first state that I consider “Dear Senator” not political history of the accurate type of Indiana, although you get the impression that rotten politics in this state inspired the writing of this novel, but just a novel. t

“Dear Senator” is told to you by a newspaper reporter who, as he tells you in his story, was employed to write pointless two or three-line comments on the editorial page of a small town paper whose policy was to straddle the fence on all politcial issues if there was any danger in offending the dear public and the advertisers. Huston has kept out of his story the influence of a single honest newspaper that could have exposed the facts to the public of which he writes. In other words, we are concerned with the “keep press” only in this story. Using the words of Fordyce, one of the harmless editorial writers on the paper, we find the situation summed up by him wlvn Jim, the editorial page aid and the teller of the story, gets a chance to leave the paper to get a political job spilling cheap bunk throughout the state. Fordyce says: “Sure, You’d be joining the gang. You’d belong to the organization. We’re against it, you and I, even if we can’t write anything. I remember better days; and I linger along hoping they’ll return-.... The men upstairs in lots of newspaper offices are just like us, faithful to an idea while they are waiting until the owners quit being business men and decide to be journalists for a change.” The outstanding accomplishment of Huston in his new story is not the rotten political background, but the chief character, Dan Meredith. Huston has built a strong character study and our chief character is

just such a pill that may come out of a rotten political system. Meredith is a consistent political crook and fraud. He can not be honest with himself anymore than he could be with the public. Dan is sort of a character who preaches against whisky and then rushes out to the nearest booze joint for a souse party. And when Dan does become United States senator, not by the vote of the people, but because he was appointed by a machine-made Governor when a senator died, we see him getting on a beautiful toot in Atlantic City and telling the world: “Anyhow United States senator. You can’t deny that. And in the end I got it myself. Money or no money. Albree had to give it to me. He knows my strength. They can’t take that away from me—l’m a senator.” Huston has given us a consistent political rotter growing out of a dirty political situation. In fact, he has given us a powerful character study, although Dan Meredith was a political rotter of the first waters.
