EXILED CUBAN USES AIRPLANE TO BEAT DEATH Given 24 Hours to Leave Native Land He Flies Out. BY CHESTER M. WRIGHT Former Secretary Pan-American Federation of .Labor. NEW YORK, Nov. 9.—Recording the first airplane escape of a political refugee, Alberto Iturralde. former minister of war and navy in the Machado government in Cuba, is in this city incognito, awaiting opportunity to tell his story to a United States senate committee. Iturralde, according to his own story, was given twenty-four hours in which to leave Cuba, the alternative being death. There were no ships sailing within twenty-four hours, so Iturralde chartered an airplane to make his flight from Cuban soil. As superintendent of education for four years, as secretary of the interior for four years under former President Zayas, and as member of the Machado cabinet in the war and navy portfolio for four years, Iturralde has had a long record of office holding. rogue” law, by which the president’s term of office was extended. Then came the election of last week, in which President Machado was the joint candidate of three parties, without opposition. Iturralde, according to his story, offered to support President Machado in an open election, with opposition, but declined to support him in a race in which there was no opposition. It was this final dispute that led to the order to leave the country. Iturralde resigned from the cabinet in July. The escape was made about two weeks ago. Since then the fugitive has been living in this city, in quarters known only to a few intimate friends. It is his plan to tell his story to the senate committee on foreign affairs if that committee resumes the investigation of Cuban matters which it began last fall. Volumes of documents, brought here for him by his wife and others, are, he says, ready to be laid before the senate committee. If Iturralde’s forecasts are correct, he will be the center of a large group of Cubans who will present themselves, ready to tell a sensational story of alleged oppression and corruption in the island. Burglars Ransack Police Office By United Press BERLIN, Nov. 9.—Burglars entered police headquarters Wednesday night. It was believed they sought documents containing evidence in the war load fraud case, in which Hugo Stinnes is involved. The intruders jimmied a door lock, but overturned a cupnoard noisily and fled. Police pursued, but failed to catch them.
