SR. REAVIS TO BE SPEAKER AT MASSMEETING Champion of Negro Cause to Give Address at Y. M. C. A. Sunday. “Danger Signals Ahead” is the subject of Dr. J. T. Reavis, of Butler university, scheduled to address a mass meeting for men only at 3 o'clock Sunday afternoon at the /. M. C. A.. Senate avenue and Michigan street. Dr. Reavis succeeds Dr. Howard E. Jensen, wno as head of the department of sociology at Butler, became nationally known because of his frank and fearless expressions on questions affecting the Negro race. Dr. Reavis has taught in South American republics and Australia during the last twenty years. His reputation is that of a forceful speaker and a fearless friend of the Negro. Music for the meeting Sunday is to be by the Attucks High school quartet and the masonic military hand. Another record is expected, say P. E. De Franz executive secretary. Conference Is Opened Large delegations from Ohio, Kentucky, and Illinois are attending sessions of the C. M. E. conference, which began Wednesday at St. Phillips temple, Drake and West streets. C. H. Phillips is presiding bishop. The Rev. A. J. Norris is pastor. Reports from the district show progress in all conference activities. Bishop R. A. Carter will preach at the church Sunday morning. Appointments by Bishop Phillips are scheduled for Sunday night. Dr. Ida Mae Miller will speak at the opening of the World Fellowship meeting Sunday afternoon at the Y. W. C. A. during the vesper hour. Dr. Miler is to lead devotional exercises each night through Tuesday, fro m7:30 to 8:30. The public is. invited. Mrs. Rose Hummons is chairman. Miss Mildred Marshall is to review “Porgy” during the story and literary hour today. This group is in charge of all meetings of the high school groups. League Is Growing “One Among the Greatest” and “The Unheeded Warning” will be the sermon subjects for the Rev. Walter Chenault Sunday at St. Paul A. M. E. church. The Young People's League and Forum of St. Paul church, which meets at 6:45, is increasing in attendance and quality of program. George Berry is scheduled to discuss the moral to be drawn from the recent election at Sunday’s meeting. “Two Sons” will be the second of the November series of- parable sermons at Jones Tabernacle church Sunday morning. The Rev. Stephen G. Spottswood is to preach. Dr. E. A. White, pastor of Simpson M. E. church, is to be the principal speaker at the church service Sunday afternon at 3 o’clock. The evening program is to be a platform service under the auspices of the W. H. M. society. Announcement is made of the death of Andrew Garrett, 1337 Columbia avenue, Thursday evening at 6 o’clock at the home. He had been a prominent citizen of the east side for a number of years. ; Funeral arrangements are announced for Mt. Zion Baptist qhurch at 1:30 Saturday afternoon. Survivors are the widow, Mrs. Millie (parrett, and Mrs. Hattie Rawles and Mrs. Minnie Donahue, daughters. Founders’ Day Planned ; A “Founders’ day” program is to be presented at Bethel A. M. E. ohurch Sunday under auspices of the Sigma Gamma Rho sorority. The program is to include an address by the Rev. R. L. Pope, and Miss Maud Meriweather is to present the purpose of the sorority as Visioned by its founders, according to Miss Margaret E. Smith, president. Miss Gertrude Martin is secretary. , Attorney R. DRIVER TO APPEAL Ex-City Employes Convicted on Drunk Charges. John Cross, 530 South West street, former city street cleaning department dump truck driver, today prepared to appeal his conviction on a drunken driving charge from municipal to criminal court. Cross and two other former street cleaning department employes, were convicted of taking a wild joy ride in the dump truck Oct. 29, narrowly missing a group of school children in West Washington street. The other employes were William Murphy, 211 North Gray street, who is making arrangements to pay a $lO fine and Boling Dillahay, 803 Smith lane, who paid a $lO fine. City hall records today showed that the trio were relieved of their city jobs the day after the alleged ride. The impression gathered from their trial Thursday that they were on a city ash collection truck was erroneous. They worked for thestreet cleaning department. A percentage of the ticket spies goes to the welfare fund of the group. PHILHARMONIC TO PLAY “Star-Spangled Banner” to Get Symphony Rendition Here. The New York Philharmonic Symphony orchestra will play the “Star Spangled Banner” to open its concert at the Murat theater Monday evening, Ona B. Talbot announced today. JOSEPH BILEr PASSES AWAY Leading Indiana Democrat to Be Buried Sunday. Joseph F. Riley, 81, long prominent :n Democratic politics in Indiana died at 3 a. m. today at St. Vincent’s hospital of pneumonia, following a week’s illness. Until he was taken sick last Friday, Mr. Riley assisted the Democratic campaign frpm headquarters at the Claypool. Born in Vernon, Ind., Mr. Riley entered politics at an early age and at 21 became Jennings county clerk. Coming to Indianapolis thirty-five years ago, he held various party and governmental offices. He was for a time a deputy in the United States pension office under Cleveland, was employed by the Indianapolis Traction Company and was secretary of the Democratic state committee for a number of years. In 1910 he became secretary of the railroad commission which later became the public service commission. He is survived by a niece, Corrine Welling, residing with Mr. Riley’s brother-in-law, A. W. Bowen, 5202 Washington boulevard. Funeral services will be conducted Saturday at 4 p. m. at the Flanner & Buchanan mortuary. Burial will be at Vernon Sunday. WRIGHT GIVES FIRST AIRPLANE TO ENGLAND Ends Ten-Year Dispute With Smithsonian Institute. By United Press WASHINGTON, Nov. 9.—Displeased' with the Smithsonian institute label describing the flight of the first airplane, Orville Wright, air pioneer, has given it to England, he announced here. The plane was loaned to the British government and placed in the Science Museum of South Kensington, London. Wright, here attending the National Aeronautic Association contest meeting, said he had made the loan permanent and the plane would not be returned to this country. ’ Final disposition of the machine ends a ten-year controversy between Wright and the Smithsonian institute over credit for air achievements.
