ONE WOMAN IN CAST OF PLAY TALKS Beautiful Dorothy Graw Is Only One of Her Sex Employed in 'The Silent House.’ DOROTHY GRAW, leading woman of '‘The Silent House,” the melodramatic thriller at English’s opera house, opening Monday night, is also the only member of the fair sex to adorn the cast. Miss Graw finds the experience unique in her career. “Plays in which there are only one feminine character are not altogether rarities,” says Miss Graw, “but I think my position in ‘The Silent House’ is rather far out of the usual. “For hot only am I the only woman in the play, but for most of its action I am at the mercy of a band of Chinese cut-thoats, as reppelent and bloodthirsty a crew as ever were assembled behind the footlights.
Again and again, it seems as if my time had really come, and that there would be no happy final curtain for me. “Taken all in all, it is a very odd position. Being the only girl in a society play, say,” continued Miss Graw, “one might feel thoroughly at home, —it would be a lot of fun keeping the male characters dancing attendance. But in ‘The Silent House’ I am surrounded by dangers on every hand, and by characters : whom I loathe and detest. Os course, there is a hero, but the evil Dr. Chan Fu and his malodorous give us very little time for love-making. “So thoroughly realistic is the atmosphere and action pervading ‘The Silent House’ that I actually seem to be living the role. Many times as I have played the part, I shudder to myself each time I make an entrance, and when things get blackest I would give anything in 'the world if there were another 'woman on the stage into whose arms Jt could throw myself. “But I have to be entirely selfreliant, and I shouldn’t be surprised if playing this part had greatly increased my own courage and sense of independence. “Bear in mind, too, that what I have said about being surrounded by thugs only refers to the gentlemen of the company in their stage parts; in real life they are thorough gentlemen, and I greatly enjoy their society. But on the stage they are too terrifying for words.”
