BATTLE TIDE TO DOCK LEVIATHAN Spend 17 Hours Getting Ship’s Anchor Weighed. / ',i/ Tailed Press NEW YORK, Nov. 9.—After a seventeen-hour battle with tide and wind wtihin New York harbor, the giant liner Leviathan was docked today. More than thirteen hundred fretful passengers were held aboard all night because the vessel was so unmanageable it could not be slipped into the pier without crashing into it or colliding with another ship. The Leviathan reached the pier at 9 o’clock Thursday night. A dozen tugs, puffing at full steam, nosed her cautiously toward the dock. But the ship missed by a narrow margin, and, caught in a swift current, was swept downstream. Officers decided to give up the attempt and wait until morning for the tide to change. Many passengers believed the vessel ran aground, but officers denied the report. Among the passengers were Clarence D. Chamberlin, trans-Atlantic flier, has wife and a party of four aviation engineers, who have been tournig France, England, Italy, Germany and Switzerland in Chamberlin’s Amphibian plane. The plane was carried on the after deck of the liner. There are nearly 1,000 agricultural laborers employed in London.
