ADMITS KILLING DUE SOLELY TO LIUUOR'S URGE Ex-Convict Faces Charge With Woman at Jeffersonville. F.tJ Tima Special JEFFERSONVILLE, Ind., Nov. 7. —Claude Lanham, 25, and Mrs. Gertrude Baltzer, 27, were arraigned here today on" first degree murder charges for the unprovoked killing of Dennis Hefferman, 27, taxi driver, near here Monday night. In a confession to Prosecutor Grover C. Todd of Clark county. Lanham admitted shooting Hefferman through the temple, causing instant death, saying: “I didn’t know Hefferman and had no reason to kill him except that I was drunk and could not control myself.” Shoots Without Word Lanham’s story of the tragedy said he and Mrs. Baltzer called the taxi and reached a point near Speeds, twelve miles north of here, when motor trouble caused a halt. Hefferman and the couple got out of the machine and without a word, Lanham fired. - The body of the driver was dragged by the couple into a weed patch thirty feet from the road. There it was noticed Tuesday morning by William and Joseph Kiebler, farmers, who notified Sheriff Hal K. Hughes. In the meantime the couple fled from the scene on foot. The sheriff overtook them and compelled surrender as Lanham reached for a revolver. Left Prison Week Ago Lanham said he was discharged a week ago from the Alabama State Prison at Stiegler, where he had served half of an eight-year term for assault with intent to kill. He said he and Mrs. Baltzer, wife of a guard at the prison, came to Louisville, Ky., immediately after his release. The woman declares she had nothing to do with the killing. When Hefferman’s widow appeared at the sheriff's office here seeking news of her husband, Lanham and his companion were being brought in after their arrest, and Mrs. Hefferman nearly collapsed when Sheriff Hughes told her the man and woman were those accused of the crime. The widow has arranged for removal of her husband’s body to Louisville, the family home, for burial. ROAD BUILDING NOT APACE WITH AUTOS $613,000,000 Spent Yearly to Improve Highways.
