GERMANY PLANS BIGGER ZEPS TO CONQUER OCEAN Eckener Announces Two New Ships to Be Built, Faster, Stronger. BY ERIC KEYSER, United Press Staff Correspondent FRIEDRICHSHAFEN, Germany, Nov. 2. —Plans for building two vast dirigibles for trans-Atlantic service, bigger, faster and stronger than the Graf Zeppelin, were announced today by Dr. Hugo Eckener. Dr. Eckener discussed the lessons learned from the trip of the Graf Zeppelin to the United States and return. Eckener said two immense hangars would be required for the new Leviathans of the air. One hangar would be in Berlin, he said, and the site of the other has not been decided. However, he believed the Rhine valley was the most favorable spot for a central trans-Atlantic airport and suggested Baden as a good location. Atlantic Not Conquered The Graf Zeppelin’s eommander, speaking at the banquet here in his honor, said the Atlantic had not been conquered by his airship. He described the furious gales in the storm through which the ship struggled off Newfoundland. He said that the great dirigible “was buffeted about and forced down” flying as low as fifty meters over high seas. It was only through “fortunate circumstances that the flight continued. It will be necessary to run airships with stronger motors at higher speed,” he said. Dr. Schutte, director of the scientific society for aeronautics/ was highly enthused about the Graf Zeppelin’s trip. “The Zeppelin has proved itself to have a degree of stability that is necessary in trans-Atlantic flights. It demonstrated its capacity as a passenger carrier and also its value for use on scientific expeditions,” Dr. Schutte said. Spain Interested Erich Koch, minister es transport, said: “The Graf Zeppelin succeeded under most difficult conditions in removing all doubts and uncertainties as to its fitness. “It no longer will be ‘airplanes and airships.’ In the future, it will be ‘airships and airplanes.’ ” Professor Junkers, head of the airplane company that bears his name, said: “I am highly pleased with the Graf Zeppelin’s performance—one which upholds the traditions of Count Zeppelin.” Voicing the sentiment of Spain, whose interest in dirigible activities has been marked, Espinosa De Los Monteros, the Spanish ambassador, said the Zeppelin had proved the dirigible to be the proper type of aircraft for ocean flying.
