The Shortridge-Manual encounter at the Delavan Smith memorial athletic field this afternoon at 2 was the “top” game on today’s high school program involving city elevens. The city rivals were to tangle on a heavy, rain-soaked field and the playing conditions were expected to be an advantage to the heavier Shortiidge eleven. Another game this afternoon attracting much attention was the Evansville-Technical battle at the Arsenal field at 2:30. Both teams are regarded as strong outfits and a hot battle was expected. Washington journeyed to Greenfield to play the high school eleven of that city and Boys’ Prep remained at home to take on the Carmel eleven at the Riverside field. One of the featured high school tilts of the week-end will be fought out Saturday at Ft. Wayne when Cathedral invades the up-state city for a clash with the Central Catholic high school squad. Managers of the Veterans of Foreign Wars’ fistic show at Cadle tabernacle Monday night appear to have made a good guess for a drawing card when they engaged Jimmy Slattery, Buffalo, to appear in the main go against Vic McLaughlin, New York. Ring fans are showing sharp interest in the bout, for Slattery is one of thd chief exponents in the art of self-defense. In fact, Slattery is recognized generally as the runner-up to Tommy Loughran, light heavyweight champion, for Tommy only beat him on points in fifteen rounds of fast milling in New York one year ago. Slattery has met all the good ones in hit; class and hes only 26. He has battled Stribling, Rosenbloom, Johnny Risko and others. And it is said Jimmy tries his best at all times. surprised by Case of Cleveland here Saturday in Ross-Ade stadium, the annual Dad’s day battle. The game is regarded by experts as a “breather” for the Boilermakers and a chance for Phelan to rest up his regulars for the Northwestern game at Evanston, Nov. 10, but Jimmy is not allowing his men to become lax and overconfident, and will start his regulars against the Case team. Should Case prove tough and stubborn, Phelan probably will let many of his varsity men stick out the contest. Many of the Boilermakers’ star reserves, however, are certain of seeing action in the battle. Ind., Nov. 2.—Basketball coaches, referees, high school principals and sport writers are expected to gather here Monday night, Nov. 12, for the second annual Anderson Y. M. C. A. basket ball clinic. A similar event last year drew seventy-five men from Madison, Hamilton, Henry and Delaware counties. “Knotty” problems, confronting coaches and officials, will be clarified at a round-table discussion to follow a banquet at 6:30 p. m. The discussion will be led by Paul Parker, Muncie Normal basketball mentor. A. L. Trester, secretary of the I. H. S. A. A., has sanctioned the confab and will attend. John D. Miller, principal, and A. R. Staggs, athletic director of Anderson high school, are on the general committee wth D. A. Cenny, physical director, Anderson Y. M. C. A. Rivers to Box Ross on Legion Card Tuesday Johnny Coulon, former bantam champion, will arrive in Indianapolis Sunday with his latest protege, Mexican Joe Rivers. Coulon is bringing Rivers here to fight Tony Ross in one of the tenrounders of Tuesday night's double windup at the Armory. Frankie Palmo of Cincinnati originally was carded to meet Ross, and everything appeared “all jake” until Major Greene, Legion matchmaker, learned that Palmo is fighting in Cincinnati tonight, a fact that was not made known to the matchmaker when he signed Palmo. So Frankie was given the air here. The record book shows the Mexican to have beaten Tommy Grogan, who is creating quite a stir at present, and also to have fought a draw with Pete Sarmiento when the Filipino was in his prime.
