MOVIE ‘DADDY’ PROUD OF CHILD Father of Cinema Thinks Clara Bow a Tie. BT RALPH HEINZEN United Fmi Staff Correspondent PARIS, Oct 26.—Louis Lumiere, the “father of the movies.” is proud of his child. Tinkering away in his laboratory in Paris, Lumiere seldom goes to the cinema, has no film favorites and couldn't tell Clara Bow from Lillian Gish. The picture industry which has brought millions of dollars to Hollywood has brought Lumiere comparatively little, but he accumulated wealth from dozens of other inventions. Despite the French official attitude that Hollywood Is corrupting the ideas of French youth. Lumiere declares that Hollywood took a toy and made It Into a trade. American film industry, in his opinion, has been responsible for most of the growth of moving pictures and the millions of humans around the T,orld who enjoy the films can thank California. It was at Lyons, the family home of the Lumieres, that Louis and his brother, Auguste, both chemists, perfected their first moving picture camera and projector. The first film they took was turned by one brother as the other brother crossed the Rhone river in a rowboat. Their first films were shown in a dark coal cellar on the Paris boulevards before an astounded audience.
