CITY MANAGER BERTH HELD TP BE SLACK’S AIM Mayor Refuses to Admit He Would Like to Land Job. Mayor L. Ert Slack today was silent on reports In political circles that “the mayor has his eye” on the city managership. “I have nothing to say about that, and won’t have,” said Slack when asked if he will seek the post. The Democratic mayor’s numerous public appearances over the city and his continual discussion of nonpartisanship in municipal government led political observers to believe the mayor is interested in establishing such a record that the commission will choose him for city manager in 1930. Unless the legislature repeals the manager statute, the business-like form will become effective in Indianapolis in January, 1930, the election of commissioners being in the fall of 1929. Slack was identified with the manager movement before he was elected mayor by city council Nov. 8 to fill the unexpired term of John L. Duvall. When he took office, Slack announced he would direct his administration along the line of nonpartisanship and do everything possible to prepare the municipality for merging with the city manager form. The mayor believes any city should have the right to choose its form of government, and offered his service to the Indianapolis City Manager League in drafting amendments to the present law which will “clear up” some minor points. Preliminary indications are that there will be at least three slates in the 1929 fall election for commis-
