GERMANS WILL FLOOD WORLD WITHNEW 'GAS' Thousands of Barrels of Artificial Product Made in Secret. Bn Times Special NEW YORK, Oct. 24.—Germany is manufacturing artificial gasoline at approximately 15 cents a gallon, or half the wholesale cost of natural gasoline in Europe. For several months 10,000 barrels of the arificial fuel a month have been marketed recently to retailers for the purpose of a commercial test, and to date no user has been able to distinguish it from natural gasoline. In 1929 the gigantic plant of the I. G. Farbenindustrie at Leuna, Saxony, which has been building under close guard since 1920, is scheduled to produce 100,000 tons of the artificial gasoline—the beginning of a program calculated to revolutionize the use of automobiles and other motive power throughout Europe. Henry de Korab, a leading French Industrial writer, makes these startling announcements in an article just published here in the November issue of The Living Age. Tests Are Revolutionary De Korab claims to be the first Journalist to learn the true story behind the huge chemical plant which has created the thriving industrial city of Leuna on a site which eight years ago was open countryside. It has been known unofficially that the Leuna plant, which ’Ostensibly produces fertilizers, has been carrying on experiments with the artificial gasoline formula developed by Dr. Friedrich Bergius, who produced the synthetic fuel in laboratory quantities several years ago. Patent rights to Bergius’ formula are owned both in France and the United States. But, according to De Korab, who quotes the resident director of the Leuna works, the Bergius method “has undergone a hundred modifications, of which the world at large has remained in complete ignorance.” Close Guard Kept It Is these improvements in the process that have made the synthetic gasoline commercially practicable. The Living Age writer reports. And they are being kept under a guard as rigid as any that ever protected an army’s strategic points in war-time. To enter the gate of the Leuna works it is necessary to pass two guards and, under their constant surveillance, submit to questioning by an under official, who demands a national passport and personal information as well as recommendations from company and government authorities before the visitor is allowed to see the director of the works. So far no outsider, German or foreigner, has been allowed farther than the director’s office, it is said. ODDS ON HOOVER~DROP Wall Street Bets 314 to 1 lie’s Next President. Bn United Press NEW YORK, Oct. 24.—Odds favoring the election of Herbert Hoover have dropped from 4 to 1 to 3Va to 1, according to Wall Street statistics.
