PASTOR TALKS ON MERITS OF THE VERY MEEK Mr. Line Preaches His Third Sermon of Series. “'Meek as Moses’ is an expression we have doubtless used over and over again without the least comprehending its significance,” the Rev. Fred A. Line said Sunday at the Central Universalist Church while delivering the third sermon of a series on “The Beatitudes of Jesus.” - ' The pastor based his sermon on the text, “Blessed are the meek, for they shall inherit the earth.” “Moses was a meek man and Jesus was a meek man, but they were by no means weaklings,” the Rev. Line maintained. -“The thought here, as another suggests, is that meekness is strength—it shall inherit the earth. “But Jesus’ idea was true. He was the grjjpt pattern of meekness. He did not bluster or boast or threaten because He was strong, not because He was weak. “The meek man is the man who centers his thought, not upon self, but upon humanity. Lacking in the spirit of selfishness, he sees and serves the better self in his fellowmam He may be called upon to undergo trial and hardship and persecution that others may be helped. But he is in the midst of life, and he performs his chosen task, fulfills his appointed mission, without complaining with heroic endurance. “The meek man is the man who centers his thought, not upon salf, but upon humanity. Lacking in the spirit of selfishness, he sees and serves the better self in his fellowman. He may be called upon to undergo trial and hardship and persecution that others may be helped. But he is in the midst of life, and he performs his chosen task, fulfills his appointed mission, without • complaining, with heroic endurance. “The meek man, if we are to take Moses and Jesus as examples, is a leader of men. He goes up onto to mountain that he may be commanded of God; but he doesn’t stay up there in the clouds; he comes down to give the divine commandments to men. He has visions of tfie promised land; but he doesn’t wrap himself up in his visions and live in an ethereal realm of raptures and ecstasies. He stands up and leads his people out of the land of bondage toward the land of promise. “He directs their thoughts and customs and religious practices. Again, he goes apart to pray, or enter the wilderness to take account of his mental stock, or visits the temple, that he may commune with the wise men; but he does not excludi himself from life’s active centers. He mingles with men. He binds up their wounds. He ministers to their needs,” the Rev. Line said. '■ *
