OPEN CAMPAIGN ON FIRE DEMON ON WESTCOAST Careless Smokers Second Lightning in Causing Forest Blazes. BY MAX STERN SAN FRANCISCO, Oct. 19. Heroic measures are afoot on the Pacific Coast to beat the forest “fire demon," which this past summer destroyed more forests, grazing lands and watersheds than in any season in history. In California the closing dry season saw the worst fire damage since 1924, which was the most destructive year on record. In Washington and Oregon the losses were relatively higher than in California. In this state fire swept 1,075,604 acres, causing more than $5,000,000 in direct losses. Post Signs in Country In southern California, where grass and brush fires were particularly disastrous to watersheds. "No Smoking” signs have been posted by county ordinance by forest reserves at San Diegoi Riverside and Orange counties. Careless smokers are listed second to lightning in the causes of fires in California and are exceeded by only lightning and railroads in Washington and Oregon. Experiments show that a man throwing a burning “snipe” into woods or dry plain gives the “fire demon” odds of one to nine. Cant Fight Mile Fire Fire engines, each equipped with enough water to extinguish a blazing front of one mile, have been built for forest fighting in Orange and Los Angeles counties. Measures considered to halt the menace are: A drive on congress for more forest-fire fighting funds. An educational campaign against the fallacious “light burning” propaganda, carelessness of smokers and campers and other causes. Co-ordination of national, state and county agencies in a preventive and emergency preparedness to cut down the fire hazard. FLIES SMALLEST PLANE 309-Pound Machine Has Engine of lorse Power.
