CHARGES G. 0. P. TRIED TO ‘BUY’ PAPER’S HELP Demands House Committee Probe Case; Produces Letters as Proof. Hy United Press NEW YORK, Oct. 15.—Representative Loring Black, Jr.. Brooklyn, in a letter to Chairman Frederick R. Lehlbach of the house committee on campaign expenditures, has charged the Republican party Is attempting to buy newspaper support in the south. Black demanded that Lehlbach call a meeting of the committee to investigate the chrages. • He produced copies of corresponence between George B. Campbell of the Hammond (La.) Vindicator and H. K. Goodwyn of the Covington (La.) Farmer. \ Offered “to Fix It Up” One letter dated Aug. 9, read: “If you care to line up with the Hoover crowd, believe that I could arrange to get you some money. In Hammond, Hoover looks to be about 3- to 1, hence I have decided to support him. “At the same time I am a Democrat in state politics. But I can not follow the Smith crowd this time. Your friend, CAMPBELL.” Goodwyn replied .according to Black’s charge: “Dear Friend Campbell—Beg to state that we have not decided as yet to commit ourselves on the President A1 race; in fact, don’t know if we will. “As far as lining up with Hoover or Smith for the purpose of getting money—that’s all wet. “The only way any officeseeker can pay us money is for them to take legitimate advertising space and pay space rates. We sell advertising only—not our body and soul.” Could Set Price Campbell was charged with replying that a newspaper had a right to secure financial support and that he had been approached by the Republicans asking if he would consider supporting them “and that I could set my price.” Campbell said he gave the support. Black said he learned of the letters after they had been printed in the Shreveport (La.) Times. The Brooklyn legislator also charged that Dr. Hubert Work had made an arrangement with an advertising agency whereby the agency would show mats or copy to newspapers and the newspapers would get some individual to pay for'inserting the advertisement. In this manner, Black charged, the national committee need not list such expenditure, as provided in the corrupt practices act. Death Notices MARLOWE,. J.
