Walter Johnson to Manage Washington Chib
Display Grabs Rich Gold Cup Turf Feature By Times Special CHICAGO, Oct. 12.—Setting a new track record in a sensational race, Display, Walter J. Salmon’s speedy thoroughbred won the $20,000 Hawthorne Gold Cup race Thursday afternoon at the Hawthorne track. Mike Hall was second by a nose and Crusader finished third. Misstep, Sun Beau, Hydromel, Chicago, Handy Mandy and Sankari finished as named. Display’s time of 2:03 broke by a full second the old record of 2:04 made by Flagstaff in 1925. The muteuls paid $27.90 to win, $11.30 to place and $5.94 to show on the winner. Mike Hall paid $6.02 to place and $3.60 to show. Crusader’s show price was $4.34.

Griffith Moves to Obtain Release of Veteran From Newark Bears. TAKES HARRIS’ PLACE Famous Pitcher Going Back to ‘Old Love.’ Cl/ United Press WASHINGTON, Oct. 12,-r-Clark Griffith, president of the Washington Senators, will sign Walter Johnson, former Washington pitcher, to manage the club next year if he can obtain his release from the Newark team of the International League, he said today. “I* certainly would 'like to have Johnson if he call get his release,” Griffiith said. The Senators’ president, however, indicated he would take no part in negotiations Johnson may have with Paul Block, owner of the Newark team, toward obtaining his release. Johnson’s contract as manager of the Newark team still has a year to run. WANTS TO GO BACK By United Press ST. Ambitious to become manager at Washington before he left that club to take over the reins at Newark, Walter Johnson, baseball pride of the National capital for many years, is slated to return as field boss of the Senators. Owner Griffith admits he wants his former ace pitcher to take the job left vacant when Stanley Harris resigned, by request, it is said. Johnson hopes to obtain the consent of Newark and accept Griffith’s offer, and it is not thought the Newark owner will stand in the way of Walter’s advancement. NO SCRIMMAGE YET Yale in Crippled Condition and Unfit for Georgia Tilt. By Times Special NEW HAVEN. Conn., Oct. 12. It is likely that the Yale eleven will tine up against Georgia Saturday without the benefit of a single scrimmage session this week. Thursday, it again was necessary to omit scrimmage. POLO CLUB COMPETITION Army Plays Sands Point—Meadowbrook Shows Class Thursday. Bu United Press NEW YORK, Oct. 12.—The United States Army pony polo team will play the Sands Point four, Saturday for the Westbury cup. On Thursday Sands Point defeated Eastcott, 12 to 11. At the same time, the Meadowbrook team won the international open polo championship by defeating the Army, 8 to 5. However, the Army had a five-goal handicap and entered the finals in the cup tournament.
