POLICE PACXED INTO BEER BELT TO CRAMP WAR Chicago Gang Chiefs Split and Violence Outbreak Looms. Bu United Press CHICAGO, Oct. 11.—John Stege, deputy commissioner of detectives, sent six carefully selected squaas into the South Side beer belt today on the strength of reports of widespread ‘‘muscling in” by rival beer runners. “We are moving into the front line trenches,” Stege said, “and we are going to stay.” “Muscling in” is gangland’s term for the process by which competitive beer syndicates invade each other’s territory and force sales of their product on saloon keepers. Capone Gang Split The disappearance of Joe Saltis, former dictator of ber distribution in one area on the South Side and the break between Scarface A1 Capone and Ralph Sheldon, Capone's former lieutenant, has resulted in a general violation of the borders which divide the territories of rival gangsters. Saltis disappeared after being sentenced to sixtd yas in jail for carrying a concealed weapon. Capone then ousted Sheldon and put Hugh (Stubby) McGovern in his place. Sheldon took his followers over to the O’Donnell gang and together they are said to have begun a campaign of “muscling in” throughout the Saltis territory. Escapes Machine Gun Attack Resentment by loyal Saltis men over that invasion is believed responsible for the machine gun attack night before last on Spike O’Donnell. Spike showed up at police headquarters today and announced that he was “out to get Saltis, whether the police can find him or not.” O’Donnell, whose gang owns all the beer trucks on the South Side, said 100 machine gun bullets had been fired at him and that he had saved himself by dropping to the sidewalk. His coat bore two bulletholes. Later O’Donnell was arrested for carrying a concealed weapon. He said, when arrested, that he was “waiting for Joe Saltis.”

Demonstration Trip Fatal Biy Times Special WABASH, Ind., Oct. 11.—Zack Levesay, 42, will never drive the auto which was demonstrated to him by Merle Schuler, local salesman. With Schuler at the wheel, the auto was struck by a street car. Levesay suffered injuries which caused his death a few hours after the accident.
