POISON ‘ALKY’ KILLS 33; RAID GOTHAM DIVES Worst Death Wave Since 1920 Brings Arrest of 13 on East Side. ‘ By United Picks NEW YORK. Oct. 9.—Thirty-three deaths within forty-eight hours from poisoned alcohol have brought a series of raids on numerous downtown speakeasies and an order from Mayor Walker for immediate arrest of the salesmen of these death potions. It is the greatest wave of poison alcohol deaths in the history of the Nation’s largest city. Only once has the number of poison alcohol deaths mounted higher during an entire year, and that was in 1920. when thirty-eight persons died from a flood of holiday alcohol. Twenty detectives went to the lower East Side and raided nine of the estimated 1,000 speakeasies in a mile and a half area. Thirteen were arrested. , Other squads will continue their raids through the East Side district, where most of the deaths have been reported. James M. Doran, prohibition commissioner, has ordered Federal agents to investigate. The flow of poison liquor thus far has not invaded the gay whoopee section of New York, up through Greenwich Village and extending on to the night club section of Broadway. The fatalities have been confined mostly to the waterfront section and the tenement district of the East Side. CHEMISTS WILL MEET Indiana Group to Assemble at Bloomington Thursday. The VerWilKo Specialist —Photo by Pearson Studio. Mr. Samuel Davis, of 206 South Audobou Road, Indianapolis, Ind., said in bis statement to the VerWilKo specialist: ‘‘l bad suffered from stomach trouble, kidney trouble and neuritis for eight or ten years. I am 09 years of age and my system would not yield to any treatment I tried, although I had tried everything that was recommended, by doctors and others. “A short while after I began taking VerWilKo I noticed a wonderful improvement. Instead of rolling and tossing all night I commenced to sleep well, then my appetite improved, my kidneys and bowels became regular, my stomach misery vanished and in a very short while I was feeling like anew man. VerWilKo is the only thing that has ever helped me. I think so much of this wonderful medicine I take it to some of my friends and customers that are not so situated that they can go to the store to buy it themselves.” VerWilKo is unlike some medicines that are prepared by ordinary laymen for the sole purpose of making money —in fact VerWilKo is not a patent medicine, but a prescription that was used by the famous Dr. J. C. Vermilya, of Bloomington, Indiana, with wonderful success in his every day practice for over twenty years. Vast throngs are calling to hear the VerWilKo specialist tell how this miracle medicine is bringing relief to thousands of seemingly hopeless cases of Stomach, Liver and Kidney trouble, Constipation, Rheumatism, Neuritis, Catarrh, Nervousness and impure blood- If you are suffering see him today.
