FOUR BRIDGES, FIVE MILES OF PAVIMOPENED Rains Put State Gravel and Stone Roads in Good Condition. Rains of the week aided in maintenance of gravel and stone surface roads and fall motoring is first rate, according to the State highway department bulletin issued today. Several new bridges and five miles of paving went into services this week. Paving projects will continue until cold weather, although the fiscal year ended Sept. 30, Director John D. Williams announced New bridges are on Rd. 7, north of Madison; Rd. 28, east of Attica; Rd. 30, southeast of Ft. Wayne, and Rd. 38, east of Hagerstown. The new paving placed in service is on Rd. 66, fror Evansville to Newburg. A nine-mile detour is eliminated. Road conditions are: Road 2—Detour from Illinois line to Road 41. Bridge run-around two and one-half miles west of Lowell. Road 3—Detour six miles north of Muncie to Hartford City. Bridge runaround one-half mile north of Petroleum. Road 15— Detour one mile at La Fontaine. Detour from New Paris to Waterford. U. S. Road 24—Bridge run-around two miles west of Goodland. New pavement open from Monticello for six and onehalf miles east, then use three and onehalf mile detour. Read 25—Pavement open from Logansport to Cass-Fulton county line, then detour for eleven miles to a point five miles south of Rochester. U. s. Road 27—Detour two miles south of Richmond. Detour from four miles north of Lynn to Winchester. Detour at Bryant. Detour one-half mile west of Berne to one mile south of Monroe. Detour from seven miles north of Decatur. Detour from south city limits of Waterloo to Pleasant Lake is fifteen miles. . Road 28—Bridge run-around six miles west of Williamsport. Detour from Williamsport to Attica. Bridge run-arounds at five and at one and one-half miles west of Romney. Detour at Romney. Detour three miles east of Romney. Detour from Farmland to Winchestr. Road 29.—Detour five miles south of Road 32. Detour at intersection of Road 32. Three run-arounds just north of Middlefork. Detour from two miles north of La Porte to junction of Road 20. O. s. Road 30—Run-around at Erie R. R. crossing two miles east of Schererville. Nine miles of old gravel road from Hanna to State Road 29 is in poor condition. tJ. S. Rd. 31—Watch for workmen repairing berms at north edge of Peru. Road 34—Detour from Veedersburg to Road 41 is one and one-half miles. Detour between Road 41 and Crawfordsville changes as surface treating progresses. Detour from Crawfordsville to New Ross is about sixteen miles, eight of which are pavement. Road 37—Detour from Paoll to one and one-half miles north of Orleans account of paving is twelve and one-half miles, fair condition. South of Bedford workmen are building shoulders (ten-mile speed limit.) Detour from Bedford to four miles south of Bloomington is twenty-two miles, narrow, steep grades and sharp Kurns although good surface Bridge runarounds five miles north of Bloomington. U. 8. Rd. 40—Bridge run-around at Stillesville. Watch out for workmen three miles west of Knightstown. U. S. Road 41—Detour at Junction of Road 34 is seven miles. WORLD’S DEEPEST OIL WELL MAY BE FLIVVER 8,255-Foot Depth Is Reached With No Results. By United Press SAN ANGELO, Texas, Oct. 5. The world’s deepest oil well may turn out to be just another hole in the ground. s Texon Oil & Land Company’s well near here has cost more than $200,000 to drill and now is 8,255 feet deep. The driller lost a bailer in the hole and has been unable to fish it out, or to pound it out of the way. If the hole is cleared, the company plans to continue the well

Geologists said the first 5,000 feet of drilling always is the hardest, and that oil certainly was down below somewhere. SHOOTS STRANGE BEAST Target of Farmer Near Bedford Escapes in Woods. BEDFORD, Ind., Oct. s.—Bert Harrison, farmer south of here, reports shooting and wounding a strange beast which escaped into & heavy woods, leaving a trail of blood. The animal is described by Harrison as having a large head sur-
rounded by fur. He was first attracted when the animal was chasing a calf. It gave up the chase and leaped into a pen and tried to carry away a pig.
