Aviation PILOTS BLAMED IN AW MISHAPS 53 Per Cent of Accidents Due to 3ad Judgment. By Science Scrcice NEW YORK. Oct. 4.—Of the four main types of air accidents, described today at the safety congress by T. P. Wright, chief engineer, airplane division, Curtis Aeroplane and Motor Company, those due to structural defects are the least important numerically, but the most important in their effect on the morale of prospective air passengers among the general public. These accidents make up 8 per cent of total air accidents. Errors in judgment of the pilots account for 53 per cent of the accidents. Better training for pilots and more easily flown planes are the remedies suggested for this class. Twenty per cent of all air accidents are due to forced landings in unsuitable places, the remedy in this case being more dependable engines and multi-engined plane* as well as more frequent landing fields. Miscellaneous conditions, chiefly storms and bad weather, account for another 19 per cent. Mr. Wright recommends more meteorological stations with adequate radio facilities for disseminating information as the cure for this type of air accidents.
