ROOSEVELT TO MAKE RAGE FOR N. TANARUS, GOVERNOR Man Who Nominated A! at Houston to Carry Democrat Standard. By United Press ROCHESTER, N. Y., Oct. 2. Franklin D. Roosevelt, former assistant secretary of the navy, was nominated today for Governor by the Democratic State convention. Roosevelt will run against Albert Ottinger, Republican nominee, for the high post that will be vacated by Governor Alfred E. Smith, Democratic presidential nominee. Out of one of those early morning conferences which are a feature of almost all political conventions came the word that Roosevelt’s reluctance to make the race had been overcome and that he would be nominated today. , Roosevelt, a cripple, placed Governor Smith’s name in nomination at the Democratic national convention in Houston, Texas. It is underderstood Roosevelt allowed his name to be placed before the State convention when it was made clear tc him that he was needed to help carry New York State for the national ticket. The Democratic slate follows: For Governor—Roosevelt. For Lieutenant Governor—Col. Herbert Lehman, New York. For Controller—Morris S. Tremaine, Buffalo, incumbent. For Attorney General—Albert Conway, Brooklyn. For Associate Judge of the Court of Appeals—Supreme Court Justice Leonard C. Crouch, Syracuse. For United States Senator—Royal S. Copeland, New York, incumbent. The platform was adopted at Monday night’s session prior to the speech of Governor Smith. The platform “felicitates” the Nat’icn upon ’the nomination of Governor Smith for the presidency and states that “he will give to the Nation as its President the same vigorous, progressive, honest, constructive, humane and intelligent administration that he has given to the State of New York for four terms as Governor.” The prohibition plank says: “The Democratic party stands for law and order; it believes that every provision of the Federal and State Constitutions should be faithfully executed and that all laws enacted in pursuance thereof should be vigorously and impartially enforced.” R. T. Byers to Speak R. T. Byers, vice president and loan officer of the American Central Life Company of Indianapolis, will be one of the principal speakers at the twenty-third annual convention of the company in St. Louis, Mo., Oct. 8-12. interestlqws AS NEWS SPREADS Woman That Was Blind and Dizzy Says Groceryman Even Noticed Her Improved Condition After Taking VerWilKo.

Mrs. Anna Smith. (Photo by Pearson Studio) VerWilKo is the most talked of medicine in Indianapolis today, because so many discouraging ailments have yielded to its miraculous powers. Here is good news for those who are suffering from stomach trouble, in this report made to the VerWilKo specialist who is explaining this wonder medicine at Goldsmith’s Washington and Alabama street drug store. Mrs. Anna Smith, 1111 E. Michigan St., Indianapolis, said in her statement: “I suffered untold agonies from gas on stomach, palpitation of the heart, had blind, dizzy spells, was very nervous and restless at night and general run-down condition. My suffering had continued for quite some time and all efforts to check it were of no avail until I saw VerWilKo advertised and decided to see what it would do for me. I have now taken six bottles and am convinced that my troubles are over—the terrible gas pains are gone, I have a splendid appetite and can eat anything I wish without the least fear of the results. All signs of heart palpitation have disappeared, I have no more blind, dizzy spells, my nerves are steady and I sleep wonderfully well. My general condition is better than it has been for years—thanks to VerWilKo. The groceryman even noticed I was 5* ''king so much better and asked me what I was doing to improve my health and I told him I was taking the miracle medicine VerWilKo.” When all others fail—try VerWilKo. VerWilKo is not a patent medicine, but a prescription used with wonderful success by Dr. J. C. Vermilya of Bloomington, Indiana, for the past 20 years. Large crowds are clamoring for this medicine wherever it is sold. Why suffer longer, get your bottle today. See the VerWilKo Specialist at Goldsmith’s Drug Store, Alabama and Washington streets. He will be glad to talk to you personally about the merits of this great medicine. VerWilKo sold at all Goldsmith’s Good Cut Rate Drug Stores.. r •
BEAUTY AT ITS BEST TITIAN TYPE OF BEAUTY REQUIRES LITTLE MAKEUP

Ann Smith ... the “Romney type.”
This Is the fourth of a series of articles written for The Tiroes and NEA Service by Alfred Cheney Johnston, one of the foremost artists among American photographers. Each day he discusses a type of feminine beauty, explains how it best can be enhanced by makeup and coiffure, tells which color schemes and styles of gowns he considers most effective. BY ALFRED CHENEY JOHNSTON Written for NEA Servile npHE titian-haired siren has been the subject of countless lores. Historians have recorded how wars have been fought for her; the poet has immortalized her in verse; and her beauty has graced the canvasses of many of the old and modern masters. A lovely titian-haired girl is Ann Smith, whom I photograph frequently. Miss Smith is divinely tall, with the poise and charm that one associates with the heroines of Romney portraits. Her hair is a delightful shade of auburn. At first glance, the tone of red seems soft and subdued, but glints of pure copper are revealed when the sun touches it. Face Is Oval Miss Smith has an oval face, a broad brow, faintly arched brows, straightforward, creal blue eyes, a small, well-shaped mouth and a straight, little nose with just a suggestion of tilt. Her skin is opaiescent and nature has given her that rich, rose-petal coloring one sees so often with auburn hair. Many girls of Miss Smith’s type have not her dark brows and lashes. And since the titian-haired girl relies so much upon her brows to bring out the color of her eyes, I would suggest that a slight application of medium brown pencil be used; but again I advise caution. Never draw a hard, dark line, but apply the pencil gently. A naturelle face powder is best for this type, and a light raspberry rouge. Never use organe-tinted rouges—for they clash with the coppery hair. Avoid Brilliant Shades Nor should a brililant shade of lip-rouge be used, for there again is the danger of it interfering with the tone of the hair. This type of girl may wear her

hair either long or short, but in either case the coiffure should be simple and loosely waved. The tall, titian-haired woman wears furs and jewelry exceptionally well, especially if she has a long, graceful neckline. Blue greens and green blues are most flattering and she wears white, black, brown, navy blue and pale yellow' to good advantage. Most shades of red and orange are not good, nor are the deep tones of yellow. Fink and rose tones make her complexion look too ruddy. Light gray is exceedingly becoming but the stately, auburn-haired lady, with blue eyes should include at least one black-and-w'hite costume in her wardrobe. GERMANY HOT ON U. S. TRAIL FOR AIRHONORS American Fliers Hold 34 World Records; Former Foes Have 32. BY ALFRED P. greatest gain for the year, adding fifteen world’s records to its aviation achievements. Germany gained seven new records, France lost two, Italy lost four, while Great Britain gained three. Germany’s spurt for flying honors is considered rema-kable by aeronautical officials, in view of the handicap that country has been working under because of terms of the Versailles treaty, which restrict its aviation development. Richard Wagner, German pilot, flying a Dornier Superwal plane, carried off the greatest honors of the year by establishing twelve individual world’s records, a feat which never has been equalled in the history of modern aviation.
