SMITH STATES TURNING G. 0. P„ HOOVER TOLD Trend in New York as Well as New Jersey Reported Away From Al. BY RAY TUCKER WASHINGTON, Sept. 26.—Private reports to Herbert Hoover and Hubert Work, national chairman, record a definite trend to the Republican nominee in, States where Governor Smith was admitted to have a distinct advantage when the campaign began, it is asserted. R[oover’s invasion of New Jersey and his Newark speech, made while the New York Governor was trying to rally the farmers around his banner, is said to have created a favorable impression with labor and capital. His speeches in New York and Boston are counted on to hold these normally Republican States, even in the face of the sensational struggle Smith is expected to stage. Prosperity Stressed All messages from the Northeast stress prosperity as the issue on which the G. O. P. must depend to carry New York, New Jersey and Massachusetts. General belief in Hoover’s greater ability to continue good times, he has been told, will more than counteract Smith’s wet appeal, especially among workers, small shop owners and the women. Two weeks ago Work was informed by Representative Robert Low Bacon, assistant to Senator Moses, New York seemed to favor the Democratic nominee. Within the last few days, Bacon added, there has been such a decided shift that Hoover would carry the State. Concentrate on New York Believing it will be all over but the shouting ii New York’s fortyfive votes go to Hoover, every effort is being made to capture that State. Chief interest at the present time is felt in the ticket which the State party will nominate at Syracuse, Friday. Careful selection of strong vote-getters, in the opinion here, is needed to give Hoover every local aid possible. Albert J. Ottinger, attorney general, is slated for the governorship. He is a Jew, and his presence on the slate may induce many of his race to vote for Hoover, though they have supported Smith in State campaigns. For this reason Ottinger’s nomination virtually is assured. LITTLE FLOWER CHURCH HOLDS NOVENA SERVICES Celebrate Second Day in Honor of St. Theresa. People who are suffering from the pangs of stomach trouble and in- j digestion, will be glad to read how Frank Baker, 625 Keasley St., South Bend, quickly overcame these agonizing afflictions. He writes as follows: “Since over a year ago, I have had a bad case of stomach trouble that just wore me out. I had sick spells that left me weak, dizzy and nervous. My appetite was very poor, and after meals the food would not digest, but felt like a rock in the pit of my stomach. I had .burning pains in my stomach. I could not sleep at night even though I was all tired out. In the morning, I got up feeling weaker and worse than when I went to bed. I lost weight and had no pep at all. The first and only relief came when I started taking Viuna. Almost at once I began to get well. I took it regularly and soon felt like a different man. The bilious attacks and burning pains stopped, my appetite came back, and my digestion improved wonderfully. I can eat heartily again with no gas, and no rock-like sensation in my stomach. My nerves are steady, I sleep splendidly every night, and feel full of pep when I get up. Life sure looks different for me since I got back to health, and I’m mighty thankful to Viuna.” Vinna acta promptly on sluggish bowels, lazy liver and weak kidneys. LOUIS LUDLOW SPEAKS ON NEWSPAPER WORK Praises “News Hound” in Address to Lions' Club. Speaking before the Lions’ Club at the Lincoln today, Louis Ludlow, Democratic nominee for Congress in the Indianapolis district, painted a picture of the “Urtseen Side of a Newspaper Man’s Life.” Himself a veteran news writer, a member of the board of governors of the National Press Club, cited many interesting chapters in his own career and exhibited several trophies, among them an original manuscript written by Robert Ingersoll in 1894 in response to Ludlow’s request for an interview. He paid high tribute to the “news hound,” saying “The newspaper profession has in its ranks an amazing number of humanitarians, who, without thought of self glorification, are doing an immense amount of good in the world.” The sword of fire seen hanging over Jerusalem before its destruction was probably Halley’s comet.
