OLDEST U. S. SALOON MUST OBEYDRY LAW All Attempts of New Orleans Absinthe House to Evade Fail. BY WM. E. NEELY United -Press Staff Correspondent NEW ORLEANS, Sept. 21.—At the corner cf Bourbon and Bienville St., in the historic Vieux Carre of New Orleans, stands America’s oldest saloon, weather-worn and awaiting conversion into a cabaret, antique shop or a grocery store. The two-story brick building is known as the “Old Absinthe House” and has reached the age of 145 years. ( Surrounded by numerous antique shops, studios, cabarets and other small shops such as compose most of the business efforts of the old French quarter, the Old Absinthe House remained true to tradition until the Eighteenth Amendment shuttered its doors—so far as the sale of its renowned product was concerned. Several times since the advent of the Volstead amendment the old place blossomed forth in an effort to regain its once famous reputation, but each time it has failed dismally. The last effort resulted in an unannounced call of a squadron of Uncle Sam’s dry sleuths and the place soon was made the victim of a padlock. It recently was released after a year’s subservience to the padlock, but since then no one has been

DENIES GLAND OPERATION WILL RETURNJfOUTH Doctor Says Men; Women Must Learn Old Age Offers Joys. NEW YORK, Sept. 21.—Rejuvenation through the use of glands has been, in general, a failure, according to Dr. Lewellyn Franklin Barker, professor emeritus of medicine at John Hopkins University. “With all due respect to Dr. Steinach and Dr. VoronofT for their investigative work in this field,” says Dr. Barker, “my observations have led me to the conviction that, to put It in common parlance, the game is not worth the candle since the effects in the-majority of cases, do not extend beyond a few weeks. "Anyway, if by the time men and women around 50 or 60 years have not yet learned that every period pf life is invaluable for its own sake, and that it has it own meanings, joys, interests and responsibilities, they have given evidence that they are not capable of learning one of the greatest lessons of human life.” Dr. Barker, writing in the current issue of the American Magazine, added that despite his feelings concerning attempts to restirje youth and beauty through the u?v of glands, he has the highest admiration and enthusiasm for the experimental and clinical work performed by Steinach, Coronoff and other scientists. “The new knowledge of glands has placed in the hands of physicians an instrument of very great

value for the understanding and cure of a number of diseases and the relief of a number of forms of suffering. “But it is rare that doctors can transform personality or perform the ‘miracles’ that the public had been led to expect,” he added.

MOVE TO SAVE TEXASCATTLE U. S. Fears Longhorn Breed May Die Out. Bii Times Special WASHINGTON, Sept. 21.—The Texas longhorn, famous cattle of the early range days, like the buffalo, is now a tenderly nurtured relic of former times. Fearing that this type might become extinct, the Department of Agriculture has taken steps to preserve sufficient number on the Wichita National Forest to insure against their complete disappearance. Will c. Barnes and John H. Hatton of the forestry service were selected to pick out the oest speciments ol this hardy breed. For weeks they hunted in South Texas before finding what they wanted, both near Corpus Christi and near Houston. Steers being the ones that develop the extremely long horns, three such animals were found and shipped to the forest. In all some twenty-five specimens were obtained for forest grazing and breeding. The longhorns were the first cattle landed on North America’s shores, being taken in 1521 from ships under command of Gregorio Villalobos, a governor-general sent to rule New Spain.
