‘WHISPERING’ IS THORN TO BOTH PARTIES^PEACE Slander Campaign Proves Two-Edged; Fail in Quash Attempts. BY PAUL R. MALLON United Press Staff Correspondent? WASHINGTON, Sept. 14.—Hoover headquarters here are worried about the whisper campaigning which appears to be gaining the momentum of a snowball rolling down hill. Repeated efforts to quash slanderous assertions about both candidates thus far have been unsuccessful. Meantime some Republicans foresee the possibility that the Democrats may attempt to set up Gov*nor Smith, the Democratic nomee, as a marytr to gossip. Work Scores Slander Hubert Work, chairman of the Republican National Committee, issued a statement Sunday denouncing the slander campaign, but the whispering has persisted. And Senator Reed Smoot (Rep.) Utah, issued a statement Thursday in which he, said: “Governor, (addressing Smith) the way to martyrdom is not via ‘What Mrs. Jones says to Mrs. Brown’.” He conselled Smith to avoid what he termed “clothesline controversies.” Hoover warned against “whispering” tactics in his acceptance speech and public efforts have been made by members of the Republican National Committee to suppress such. t Appeal For ‘Fair Play’ Chairman Raskob of the Democratic National Committee applauded Work’s anti-whispering statement. Democrats already have begun their defense against rumors against them and Republicans believe Democrats are planning to appeal to “fair play” for their candidate. Al Jokes of ‘Whispers’ BY THOMAS L. STOKES United Press Staff Correspondent ALBANY, N. Y„ Sept. 14. Governor Al Smith tightened up political fence today in his own State to turn to his western campaign. He discussed the State campaign in all its phases, including the likely gubernatorial nominee, Thursday night at the mansion with' State leaders. Settles State Business With this important conference the Democratic candidate dismissed State affairs until his return to Rochester, Oct. 1, after the two weeks western trip, when he will sound the call, formally, to State chieftains of the Democratic State convention. The Democratic candidate began to receive at his office today messages upon his statement “nailing as a lie” the report that he was “disgustingly intoxicated” recently at the Syracuse State fair, which constituted his first formal recognition of the “whispering campaign.” Uses Magnifying Stars Smith displayed keen interest in the publicity given his statement. Mock-seriously, he studied newspaper photographs of himself and his party in the grand stand at the State fair with a magnifying glass in his office at the capitol. He was asked by a newspaper correspondent what he was doing. "I’m looking for those two men who were supposed to be holding me up,” he said. ARRESTED, CONFESSES ROBBING THREE HOMES Paroled Prisoner Found With Stolen Goods. Three recent home burglaries were confessed today by Carl Irwin, 31, of 327 S. Warman Ave., to Detectives Louis Fossati and Patrick Roche. Irwin, paroled two _ months ago from the Indiana State Reformatory, was arrested Thursday when Detectives Thomas Barnaby and Clifford Beeker saw him on the W. Michigan St. bridge counting money. He had $46, a wrist watch and an expensive pencil in his possession. He admitted these burglaries: Home of John Rodey, 741 Haugh St., Aug. 14, took $95 trumpet; home of E. H. Petrey, 2441 S. Meridian St., suit, two watches, Sept, 8; home Mary E. Gerlick, 953 N. Holmes Ave., wrist watch found in his possession, two weeks ago. PREDICTS G. 0. P. ’SLIDE Colonel Roosevelt Says Hoover Will Sweep New York State. B.y United Press I CHICAGO, Sept. 14.—C01. Theodore Roosevelt today predicted an overwhelming majority for the Republican national ticket in New York State. “Maine was only a straw in the wind,” the colonel said. “You will see the biggest up-State Republican vote ever recorded in New York State. You will see a tremendous vote for Hoover in the very heart of the district Tammany counts as its own.” OBSERVE ANTHEM DAY “Star-Spangled Banner” Written Sept. 14, 1814. Today is the anniversary of the day Sept. 14,1814, Francis Scott Key, held a prisoner on a British vessel off Ft. McHenry composed the “StarSpangled Banner.” W. C. Grigsby.
