Four Survivors Battle in Amateur Golf Semi-Finals
Foreign Net Stars Face Hard Tests American Hopes Rise as Invaders Hit Rough Sailing. BY GEORGE KIRKSEY United Press Staff Correspondent FOREST HILLS, N. Y., Sept. 14. —The two foreigners—Henri Cochet of France and Jack Crawford of Australia—left in the national tennis championships today faced an uphill struggle today to remain in the tournament. Instead of the anticipated collapse 6f the American forces, the invaders have gradually faded away until only Cochet loomed as a possible semi-finalist. Matches Halted Rain and darkness halted two quarter final matches before they were completed Thursday after George Lott, Jr., Chicago youngster, and Frank X. Shields, 18-year-old New York boy, had galloped into the semi-finals in. straight set victories. Cochet was to resume his match with Gregory Mangim, 20-year-old Newark, N. J„ phenom. Sweeping Cochet off his feet with a fierce attack, Mangirp won the first set, 6-4. Cochet won the first game of the second set on service after it had been deuced eight times and play was halted by a rainstorm. Hunter in Form Francis T. Hunter, the New Rochelle veteran had to win only one more set from Jack Crawford to enter the semi-finals. Hunter won the first set from Crawford, 7-5, dropped the second 3-6, and won the third, 6-3. The players never re-, turned to the court to complete their match as rain started falling before they finished their rest period. Anew star was hailed in tennis circles today in the wake of Shields’ crushing victory over Jacques Brugnon. Shields overwhelmed the Frenchman, 7-5, 6-1, 6-0. Lott won in a canter from Doeg. Lott punched his way through the weak spots in Doeg’s defense to win easily, 6-2, 6-2, 7-5. INVESTIGATE 'RACE RING’ CHICAGO, Sept. 14.—Investigation of an alleged ring manipulating races in the Chicago district and capitalization on the sale of “tips” will be launched by the Illinois Turf Association today. The action of the turf body, it was said, arose from information that the telephone company here was attempting to collect a bill of $559.07 from Jockey C. E. Allen for long distance calls made by Mrs. Catherine E. Allen, said to be the jockey’s wife.

Bobby Jones Tees Off Against Phillips Finlay, Harvard Soph. VOIGHT VS. PERKINS Two Victors Clash for Crown Saturday. BULLETIN Bji United Press WEST NEWTON, Mass., Sept.. 14.—Bobby Jones was seven up on Phillips Finlay at the end of thirteen holes, while Philip Perkins vas leading George Voight, three up at thirteen. BY FRANK GETTY United Press Sports Editor BRAE BURN COUNTRY CLUB, WEST NEWTON, Mass., Sept. 14. Four able golfers, as strong a quartet as ever reached the semi-final round of a national championship, competed today for amateur honors at Brae Burn. On a little table near the starting tee, the tall gold cup which bears three times on its burnished sides the name of Robert Tyre Jones, Jr., of Atlanta, stood as a gentle hint to the contestants as they set out for their morning rounds. And the stalwart figure of Robert Tyre Jones, Jr., himself stood out among the little group of semi-final-ists which went whacking away down the sloping first fairway on the quest for his title. First to tee off were George Voigtof North Hills, and his opponent, Philip Perking, the British Amateur champion, who is the first of his countrymen to reach the semi-final round of an American championship since Willie Hunter won his way that far in 1921. After the smaller gallery which chose to surround this match had been swept from the first fairway, Bobby Jones teed off against Phillips Finlay, the Harvard sophomore, a newcomer to national golfing fame.

Western Welter Wins Close One Bn United Press NEW YORK, Sept. 14.—Young Corbett, 111, today held a twelveround decision over Sergeant Sammy Baker, “trial horse” for welterweight contenders, but New York fight fans doubted if the heralded California southpaw was headed toward the 147-pound championship. Making his Eastern debut in Madison Square Garden Thursday night, Corbett won the verdict from Baker, but the award was an unpopular one. Corbett had Baker on the floor for a count of nine in the seventh from a short right to the stomach.
